The Midway Volunteer Fire Department is proud to announce that we are now Gold Helmet Certified through NIOSH and National Firefighter Registry for Cancer! This makes us 1 out of 163 fire departments in the United States to achieve this important recognition. This certification represents our continued commitment to the health, safety, and the well-being of our firefighters, both on and off of the fireground. On Sunday April 26, Midway Volunteer Fire Department hosted a 6-hour training lecture titled “The Fireground Playbook: Tools for Managing a More Organized Fireground.”

Members learned the 8 functions of the command system, how to apply the functions to make a successful fireground, recognition prime decision making, and gave everyone “slides” that they can put into their personal “slide-bank” to assist in making future decisions on the fireground. The 8 functions of the command system included deployment management, assume/confirm/position of command, situation evaluation (size-up), strategy development/incident action planning, incident communications, incident organization, review/revisions, and continuation/support/termination of command.

We would like to thank Chief Sohyda from the Upper St. Clair Fire Department for presenting and Wally’s Towing for providing lunch. Not only did our members attend but we also had members from Slovan VFD, Mt. Pleasant VFC, Sturgeon VFD, Hanover VFD and the City of Washington Fire Department in attendance.
