The purposes of the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) are below.

1. Provide advice concerning unmet needs in the education of students with disabilities in Chesterfield County.

2. Assist in the formulation and development of long-range plans, which will provide services needed for students with disabilities in Chesterfield County Public Schools and community.

3. Participate in the dev

elopment of priorities and strategies for meeting the identified needs of students with disabilities.

4. Submit an annual report with recommendations regarding the education of students with disabilities to the School Board through the Superintendent.

5. Assist in interpreting to the community, plans for meeting the needs of students with disabilities for educational services.

6. Review annually the updated Annual Special Education Plan and Application for Federal Flow-Through Funds thirty (30) calendar days prior to submission by the Superintendent to the School Board. Please remember Facebook is used to engage in professional and informative discussions with other parents. To that end, please do not refer to a specific child and/or school. This includes identifying information such as names, initials, “I have a child who…”, etc. Please remember to use appropriate language and professionalism at all times while using Facebook. Research studies show that students with disabilities are more likely to be bullied than their non-disabled peers. One study has it as high as 63% of disabled students as compared to 25% of non-disabled students.

CCPS has implemented a new tool this year to help combat bullying called STOPit. An email explaining the new tool was sent out by the division today. You can also go to the link in the comments to read about CCPS’ Promote Respect initiative which is how the division educates families and students about bullying prevention. Did you know that the public is invited to attend our meetings?

Members of the general public can attend meetings to hear what is discussed and then have an opportunity to speak during our Public Comment period.

Come be part of our process and let your voice be heard to strengthen special education in CCPS.

Our meetings are on the first Wednesday of September-May (no meetings in January or April) at 5:45-7:45 pm in the large meeting room at the North Courthouse Library.

The Arc of the United States is offering access to their Special Education Advocacy Curriculum, a self-paced online training available in English and Spanish, thanks to scholarships provided by Comcast.

Whether you're a parent, educator, or professional who supports students with disabilities, this training is for you.

Scholarship slots are limited and will be filled on a rolling basis, so request yours as soon as possible.

Your Choice, Your Voice
Thursday, September 24, 3-7 pm

Learn about services, build self‑advocacy skills, and meet providers at our upcoming provider fair.

This initiative empowers individuals to take an active role in choosing their service providers and speaking up about the supports they need. We’re also highlighting the importance of clear communication and accessibility, encouraging providers to use plain language and offer materials in multiple formats.

The free event will feature sessions on self‑advocacy, plain‑language communication, and information about waiver and Medicaid services. We’ll finish with a provider fair where individuals and families can meet providers and explore available options.

The Youth Empowerment Transition (YET) Council is for Virginia youth with disabilities, ages 14-26, interested in:

-Building self-advocacy skills
-Giving input and advising PEATC on issues that involve youth
-Creating new friendships
-Learning to be an active member in their school and community
-Developing leadership skills

Meetings are held on Zoom monthly (every second Monday unless otherwise stated).

Start the school year off right with a PEATC workshop hosted by the Special Education Committee of the Evergreen Elementary PTA!

Ins and Outs of IEP Meetings will be presented in person on September 23, 6-7 pm at Evergreen Elementary, 1701 Evergreen Parkway, Midlothian, VA 23114.

This presentation will help prepare parents for what to expect in the IEP meeting and how to have a productive, student-focused meeting. From pre-planning before the meeting to working together afterwards, this presentation will help participants learn how to build relationships while focusing on the needs of the student.
