Firefighters don’t just rescue cats from trees…
This week the Midland Fire Department, in collaboration with neighboring departments from Midland County, Saginaw County, and beyond, completed an intensive 30-hour tree rescue course led by Emergency Response Solutions Intl.
This program blended classroom instruction with hands-on practical scenarios focused on rescuing arborists, hunters, parachutists, and individuals not secured in a harness. Training emphasized safe victim access and work positioning in trees, along with chainsaw handling, limbing and bucking techniques, and safety considerations.
Participants also performed risk assessments and learned anchoring and rigging physics, team logistics, patient-packaging methods, and more. Participants must have completed previous rope rescue training.
By completing these courses, our team strengthens its ability to adapt quickly and operate safely in rescue situations. This is just one of the many ways the Midland Fire Department continues to sharpen its skills to best serve you.
Congratulations to the 18 rescuers and forestry teammates who completed this training!
This course was hosted at Midland Fire Station 1 and Emerson Park. Huge thanks to the Midland Parks and Recreation Department for providing the trees and logs!
