The Midland Fire Department would like to congratulate Steven Merrill on completing his probationary year. Steve is a fireman on 'A' shift, which was the same shift that his step father, Rodney, worked on before he retired.

Congratulations Steve!

Good afternoon, Midland! If you are lucky enough to be in town today, make sure you swing by 2700 Abbott St. and go see Scout. One of our city's newest entrepreneurs, Scout, has a refreshment stand in front of his house and is doing his part to help keep the city hydrated. Stop by and say hi, and wish his dog Marley a happy 2nd birthday as well!

PSA: If you see fire trucks at the overflow parking lot of Dow Diamond, there is no need to be alarmed. Every year, we test our fire hose to a standardized pressure to ensure it will withstand the rigors of our job and requirements.

Today, B shift is testing their assigned hoses. Each shift is assigned 1/3 of the hose to test and record; this is another example of one more additional responsibility we are tasked with during our 24 shift.

PUB-ED ALERT:
Each month, educators from our Fire Prevention Division visit Kindergarten and 1st Grade classrooms to teach age-appropriate fire safety topics that help build lifelong safety habits. In March, the Fire Prevention Division hosted a Reading Month Challenge across participating schools to encourage reading and learning among our youngest students. Students competed to see which class could read the most books during March Reading Month, with the winning class from each grade earning a pizza party with the Fire Marshal. We are incredibly proud to share that across 3 participating schools, students read an impressive total of 5,371 books during the month of March.
The Midland Fire Department takes great pride in supporting Midland Public Schools in a way that not only educates, but also invests in the future success and safety of the next generation. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue building positive relationships with our community’s students, teachers, and families.

May is a lot of things, but one of the most important is Mental Health Awareness Month. Over the years, mental health has been talked about more and more. It is a very important (and hard) topic to bring up, but don't be afraid to check in on your friends, family, or others who are important in your life. Even a quick, 'How are you?' or 'You good, bro?' is a good way to be present in the lives of those who are important to you. Sometimes, being present is the best thing you can do.

The Midland Fire Department responded to what turned out to be a fatal water rescue on Saturday, May 2nd. This is our Press Release from the incident.

We are grateful for the working relationship that we have between private, local, and State agencies. With help from Midland County 911, Dow ES&S, and paramedics from MyMichigan Health, MFD's C-shift platoon was able to utilize their help to recover the body safely, with as much respect and dignity as possible.

As you might have heard from the City of Midland, Michigan - Municipal Government's recent post, we received a sizeable FEMA grant for new Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). This grant includes new SCBAs for City of Saginaw Fire Department and Bay City Department of Public Safety, as well. The equipment arrived about a week and a half ago, and will be put into service once all of the membership has been trained on it later this month.

This was a process that for us, started back in 2023. We created a committee of MFD membership who wanted to find the best possible SCBA for our members, with versatility, ease of use and cost in mind. After testing four different manufacturers, we settled with the Scott brand. We gathered the necessary information and worked with one of our fellow city employees who deals with grant writing to help us finesse the final draft.

Our first attempt did not get granted, so we changed tactics and reached out to Bay City and Saginaw Fire Departments, and created a regional grant request for all three. We submitted that request in 2025, and slowly made it past each one of the steps. About two weeks ago, we received a semi-truck load of equipment and began the tedious process of sorting and inventoring each piece, so it can be trained on by our membership and then placed into service.

This wouldn't have been possible without the original group of MFD members who put in valuable time and effort to research the information, meet with vendors and head up the testing. This was by no means a quick and simple process, but at the end of the day this will benefit us for many years to come.

We'd also like to thank Connor, the new hire on 'A shift' for modeling the equipment.

On this day, 58 years ago, Captain John Boice and Fireman Charles Finney died after drowning while attempting to rescue four teens who got caught in the undertow of the Tittabawassee River as it approached a low-head dam. When searching for the teens, Captain Boice and Fireman Finney became caught in the same undertow and drowned. The deaths of these two members are the first Line of Duty Deaths of the Midland Fire Department. In addition to these two deaths, three of the four teens perished as well.
