Disability Network of Mid-Michigan

Disability Network of Mid-Michigan We promote and encourage independence for all people with disabilities. Creating access and inclusion

We believe in what is known as the Independent Living Philosophy. The Independent Living philosophy postulates that people with disabilities are the best experts on their needs, and therefore they must take the initiative, individually and collectively, in designing and promoting better solutions and must organize themselves for political power. We believe that people with disabilities have the sa

me right to participation, to the same range of options, degree of freedom, control and self-determination in every day life and life projects that other citizens take for granted. Thus, we as IL activists seek the removal of infrastructure, institutional and attitudinal barriers in our communities.

June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month — a time to celebrate identity, self-expression, inclusion, and community. 🌈

We recognize that many people live at the intersection of multiple identities, including LGBTQ+ identity and disability. Pride Month is an opportunity not only to celebrate progress, but also to continue building communities where everyone feels respected, valued, and included.

To learn more about the experiences of people living at the intersection of disability and LGBTQ+ identity, grab a snack watch this powerful video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otrCudX_ecg

"The opening of the Changing Places facility downtown is a monumental step forward for Midland. True accessibility means going beyond the bare minimum of standard ADA compliance to meet the needs of neighbors with complex disabilities. By providing this space, our city is actively removing the invisible barriers that isolate individuals and their care partners. It sends a clear, powerful message about our community values: that individuals of all abilities belong in our public spaces, our festivals, and our local businesses. Midland should be incredibly proud to lead the way in Michigan on this vital front of universal design."
- Kelly PeLong, Executive Director, Disability Network Mid-Michigan

The Legacy Center and its partners are seeking input from Midland County residents aged 19-59 to understand what is working and where there might be gaps that additional supports can fill. Please take 5-7 minutes to complete their survey so they can learn more, stay responsive, and keep doing cool things.

When you see how easy it is, feel free to forward! They are hoping for 400 more responses before it closes on June 8.

Friends, we need your help! The Legacy Center and our collaborative partners (Midland Wellness Midland Area Cultural Awareness Coalition and Senior Services Midland) are in the final stages of the Assets Across the Lifespan project. We're reaching out to Midland County residents who are 19-59 to help us understand what's going well for our residents and what gaps might exist. This anonymous survey will take you about 10 minutes to complete, but the information you provide will be invaluable! (Are you 60+ and haven't participated? Check the comments for our 60+ survey!)

Family caregivers are the backbone of our care system—and their impact is bigger than ever. A recent AARP report estimates that unpaid family caregiving in the U.S. is now valued at over $1 trillion each year. That’s millions of people helping loved ones with daily needs, often while balancing work, family, and their own health.

If you’re caring for someone - or planning ahead - you don’t have to do it alone. Through MI Options, DNMM can connect you to local resources like in-home support, transportation, and more.

The program nearly doubled eligibility to include people whose disability began before age 46. This impacts up to 1 million people! It’s a major step forward for independence, opportunity, and long-term security.
