The Picture Portal is now open, and we invite you to share your photos of the Manchester Inn!

Thank you to Beverly Gardner for sharing a snapshot from the Gardner/Hughes wedding, held in the Grand Ballroom on July 19, 1976. We also received two images showcasing the setup for other celebratory events at the Manchester Inn.

We know many residents have cherished memories like this, and we want to help preserve them as part of our city's rich history. At 10:28 AM, after standing for 102 minutes following the initial strike, the North Tower collapsed. The iconic skyline of New York was permanently altered, and the full weight of the tragedy settled over the nation. Amid the grief, darkness, and silence that followed, the days that came after also revealed extraordinary resilience, unity, and the enduring strength of communities coming together to support one another.

Middletown Fire Captain John Scranton had four family members who worked for the New York Fire Department on September 11, 2001. He recounts their experiences that day and reflects on the days, weeks, and months that followed.

For those too young to remember or born after 2001, how did you first learn about 9/11 from your family or teachers?

Thousands of lives were lost in seconds, including hundreds of courageous firefighters, police officers, and emergency workers who willingly ran into the tower to save others. The falling structure sent a towering cloud of dust through Lower Manhattan, marking a moment of absolute heartbreak and profound loss for the entire world.

In the days and weeks following 9/11, what moments of community unity or kindness stood out to you the most?

Seventeen minutes after the first impact, at 9:03 AM, United Airlines Flight 175 struck floors 77 through 85 of the South Tower. Millions of people watching live television news broadcasts witnessed the impact unfold in real time. The initial confusion dissolved into a collective, painful realization that our world had changed forever, binding an entire nation together in shared grief and disbelief.

How did you feel when you saw the footage or first learned that a second plane had hit?

At 8:46 AM on September 11, 2001, the course of history shifted in an instant. American Airlines Flight 11 struck floors 93 through 99 of the World Trade Center’s North Tower. In a split second, a bright Tuesday morning in New York City turned into a scene of unimaginable confusion, shock, and bravery as first responders rushed toward the unknown. It was the moment a quiet morning became a day America would never forget.

ON THIS DAY IN MIDDLETOWN HISTORY:

Middletown native Susan Perkins was crowned Miss America 1978 on September 10, 1977, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Perkins was named Miss Ohio in 1977 before going on to earn the Miss America title.

At the time she was crowned Miss America, Perkins was living in Columbus and working as a legislative assistant in the Ohio General Assembly. Throughout her career, she has worked as a professional singer, spokesperson, and television reporter.

UPDATE (THU 1:30): Two lanes have reopened on Grand Avenue.

ORIGINAL POST: Grand Avenue between Jackson Lane and Eaton Avenue will be closed for 48 hours beginning at noon. Detour signs will be posted directing drivers to use Jackson Lane, Lewis Street, and Eaton Avenue as an alternate route.
