Mayor's Message

Dear Neighbor,

I am pleased to announce an exciting change that has been in the works, following many requests from our community. The Common Council has unanimously approved, and I signed, the repeal of the winter street parking regulations.

Beginning this winter, instead of blanket restrictions for on-street parking, the City will declare a Snow Alert in anticipation of winter weather. Once declared, city-wide parking restrictions will be in effect and enforced to allow for safe and efficient snow/ice removal.

To help everyone stay informed, the city will be sending postcards to all residents with details about the new regulations and how snow alerts will be communicated.

Additionally, we are establishing a dedicated hotline that will be updated during snow season to provide real-time information on weather-related parking restrictions.

This new policy balances easing parking challenges and ensuring public safety during snowstorms. We hope this change improves your day-to-day life and appreciate your cooperation when snow alerts are activated.

I am also happy to announce that the Council has adopted the following leaf clean-up schedule: From November 4, 2024, to December 6, 2024, the City of Middletown will hold its city-wide clean-up period for leaves. During this time, leaves can be placed in the street no further than four (4) feet from the curb. Please remember that leaves must be placed in receptacles during all other times of the year.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) crews will be picking up leaves in the street during this period only—there will be no exceptions.

The pick-up schedule is as follows:
1. Fourth Ward
2. First Ward
3. Second Ward
4. Third Ward

Please do not put your leaves in the street until it is your ward’s week for pick-up. If you have any questions, please contact the DPW at 845-343-3169.

I am excited to announce that the Mulberry House Senior Center and the Golden Age Senior’s Club will be celebrating their 70th Anniversary this December! To commemorate this milestone, a journal will be created to honor and recognize the local businesses and community members who have supported and collaborated with our senior programs over the years.

If you or your business would like to sponsor the anniversary journal, we have included information on how to do so below. Thank you in advance for your support and recognition of this important event. Your generosity helps us continue to provide valuable programs for our seniors.

Lastly, I encourage you to join us for a ribbon-cutting ceremony next week as we welcome a new business to Middletown:

Ocean Aesthetic & Technic Nails
When: Thursday, October 17, 2024
Time: 1:30 p.m.
Where: 203 Wickham Ave, Suite 105, Middletown, NY 10940

Please join us in showing your support for our local businesses, which are vital to our city's continued growth and prosperity.

Lastly, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year in the Jewish faith. For those observing, this day is marked by reflection, atonement, and prayer. On behalf of the City of Middletown, I extend my best wishes for a meaningful and peaceful Yom Kippur to all members of our community.

Sincerely,

Joseph M. DeStefano
Mayor

What's happening down south with the hurricane is horrible? We in NY remember the reaction of GOP congress people. We're not like them. In a way I believe that's what the upcoming election is about. Read what the GOP was saying back then, read what they said when it happened to them. Remember and vote. Also the damage is devestating and I'm happy That Biden / Harris is moving quickly on aid.

Them: especially one of the biggest phonies, Little Lindsay of SC

“Soon after Hurricane Sandy ravaged New York and New Jersey, many Republicans in Congress lined up to oppose federal funding to help storm victims.

"We've got a trillion-dollar budget deficit, $1.1 trillion, to be precise, and we're just adding another $60 billion right on top of that," Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania said on January 28, 2013.

Those opponents included South Carolina's two Republican senators, Tim Scott and Lindsey Graham, and every Republican member of the state's congressional delegation.

But now that Graham's home state is being devastated by deadly floods, the senator and the other South Carolina Republicans in Congress are changing their tune on federal disaster assistance.

"Rather than putting a price tag on it, let's just get through this thing and whatever it costs, it costs," Graham said Monday on CNN's "The Situation Room."

When pressed, Graham initially told CNN he couldn't recall voting "no" on the Sandy bill.

"I don't really remember that," he said.”

Otisville Correctional Saved!
Hey Neighbor,

After a long period of uncertainty, I want to take a moment to share some exciting news - Otisville Correctional Facility is saved from closure! In her agenda for this year’s budget, the Governor announced plans to shut down an additional five prisons in New York. As I did when a similar threat was advanced in 2019 - and again in 2021 - I fought hard in Albany to ensure Otisville wouldn’t be among the closures.

Otisville Correctional is central to the economic vitality of the village, town, and broader Orange County community, and not only as a major employer. Though this might not spring to mind when any large facility is faced with closure, as the largest water consumer in Otisville, the state prison’s closure would have resulted in an annual increase of local residents’ water bills of over $1,000. That’s an economic blow many of us could not withstand.

The Governor’s approach to announcing multiple prison closures with truncated termination timelines has been a source of deep concern for me—and clearly would have been a raw deal for Otisville. I am gratified Otisville Correctional Facility will continue to serve the state of New York as it always has, and that the fight paid off. I will always ensure Orange County residents are heard up in Albany.

Sincerely,

James
