Please take a moment to watch this demonstration on the importance of closing the door to a fire area. Whether you live in a private house or an apartment building, ALWAYS close your door in the event of a fire.

During the last 2 days, members from our department joined the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, Pocatello, Slate Hill, Monticello and Goshen Fire Departments for collaborative ice rescue training at Silver Lake, reinforcing coordination and preparedness on the ice.

The Silver Lake Fire District reminds the public that ice conditions are unpredictable and no ice is ever completely safe. Residents are encouraged to keep the following ice safety tips in mind:

• Ice thickness can vary—approximately 4 inches for skating or ice fishing; 5 inches for ATVs; and 8–12 inches for small vehicles
• Blue or clear ice is generally the strongest, while white ice is weaker; grey or black ice is unsafe
• Stay off ice near inlets, outlets, and areas with moving water
• Never venture out alone and always let someone know your plans
• Wear a life jacket (PFD) and carry ice picks or safety spikes
• If someone falls through the ice, call 9-1-1 immediately—do not attempt a rescue
• If you fall through, turn back toward the direction you came from and crawl out

Cold water can quickly overwhelm even strong swimmers. Stay aware, stay prepared, and enjoy winter activities safely.

10 years ago today, our department suffered the tremendous loss of Lieutenant Justin Speights. Some of our members kept the annual tradition alive by spending some time with him and thanking him for continuing to watch over us. Please take a moment to remember Justin today and continue to keep his family, friends and brothers in your thoughts and prayers.
