Retired United Airlines flight attendant Paul Veneto pushed an airline beverage cart more than 750 miles along routes symbolizing the flight paths of the four aircraft that were hijacked on September 11, 2001. He pushed in honor of the flight crews. We were glad to be a part of his journey this morning!

Tonight we celebrate an amazing accomplishment by Westfield Fire members Caitlyn Avery and Katia Bagwell who have successfully completed the Firefighter 1 / 2 class! Caitlyn and KT were joined by their family, classmates, Chief Coco, Lt Velardi and FFs Harrison and Pasquale at Wethersfield Fire Station 3. Congratulations and welcome to the fire service. We are so proud of you and are love having you both on our team.

The Officers and Members of the Westfield Fire Department regret to announce the passing of 60 year member and past Commissioner Edward Dypa.  Ed continued to attend department ceremonial and social events including this year’s Memorial Day ceremony. We will join his family and honor our longtime member during his funeral services this Monday and Tuesday.

Some of our members spent the morning going over operations and equipment on our ladder truck. The jobs of a ladder company on the fireground are extremely important to the outcome of a fire, so knowing this truck inside and out is extremely important.

We are fortunate enough to have many senior members who are willing to give up time to teach and mold the newer generation of firefighters.

At 22:21, the Westfield Fire Department was alerted to a leak coming from a tractor trailer truck that was located at Estes Trucking - 437 Middle Street in Middletown. On arrival we found a 53 foot trailer leaking with a small v***r cloud overhead. The liquid spill was flowing toward a storm drain. Westfield Fire Department identified that the trailer contained a large amount of hydrochloric acid and immediately summoned the resources of the Guilford Fire Department hazardous materials team and the State of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Because of the remote location, no residential evacuations were necessary. Cleanup was completed at 2:45am. There were no injuries. Westfield Firefighters recently trained with the Guilford Hazmat Team and that training paid off during this response with both departments working together to mitigate this emergency.

EMT CLASS at WESTFIELD FIRE
Learn how to save the lives of those suffering from a critical medical emergency or traumatic injury by training to be a CT certified Emergency Medical Technician. Each class session includes in person instructor led lessons and hands on practical skills. Classes will be held Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30pm-9:30pm beginning September 14th and finishing December 17th. This class boasts a 100% first time pass rate on the national certification exam (NREMT). Classes will be held at the Westfield Fire Department 653 East Street in Middletown. If you live in the Westfield District we have opportunities for you to work with us as an EMS responder upon completion of the class.
