🌿 Native Plant Spotlight: Blue Flag Iris (Iris versicolor) 🌿

Blue Flag Iris brings vibrant color to Wisconsin’s wetlands each spring, with rich violet-blue blooms that stand out along marshes, shorelines, and wet prairies. Found throughout much of eastern North America, this clump-forming perennial thrives in moist habitats such as wetlands, streambanks, and pond edges, where it spreads gradually through underground rhizomes.

Also known as Harlequin Blue Flag, Northern Blue Flag, or Large Blue Flag, this native plant provides important habitat and nectar resources for pollinators. Its showy flowers bloom in May and June, attracting bees, skippers, and hummingbirds. The flowers feature distinctive yellow markings that help guide pollinators to their nectar source.

These flowers were photographed in the Middleton Hills Wetland. Next time you're exploring local parks, trails, or natural areas, keep an eye out for these beautiful native blooms growing in wet and sunny spaces!

Have you spotted any wildflowers on your recent walks? Drop a photo or comment below and let us know!

🚧 Upcoming Maintenance - MRD (HWY Q) Dog Park 🚧

The City of Middleton Parks Crew will be conducting routine maintenance at the MRD (HWY Q) Dog Park on Wednesday, June 10.

For the safety of both our human and canine visitors, the dog park will be closed until 3:00 PM while maintenance is underway. The park will reopen for regular use once work is complete.

During the closure, please visit the Dog Exercise Area at Penni Klein Park (8780 Airport Rd) or one of the Dane County off-leash dog parks.

Thank you for your patience as we work to keep our parks safe, clean, and enjoyable for everyone!
