The current photos are along the stretch of South Main Street between Carquest and the Middlebury Elementary school. This is a 35 mph zone. Middlebury officers as well as the businesses and especially the elementary school along this stretch have noticed average speeds between 45 and 55 mph daily. Especially during school hours and the times before and after school where the school zone changes to 25 mph. Please SLOW down and help keep the public and especially the elementary students and their bus drivers safe!

On the early morning hours of February 14th (Valentines Day), one of our officers observed what possibly could have been a suspicious vehicle at a business where normally vehicles are not present during those hours. The officer investigated and found it to be one of the owners of the business arriving earlier than normal to start a busy Valentine's Day. The owner was very appreciative that our officers are out there looking out for their businesses and the safety of our citizens. The owner turned around and thanked us by sending us chocolate covered strawberries! It wasn't necessary as this is part of our officer's job and what is expected of them. Thank you for the goodies anyway!

Follow up from today's press update (in graphic):

Earlier this afternoon, Chief Milanese and Mayor Roberson held a joint press event to discuss recent violence in the community and explain the process after the Elkhart County Homicide Unit takes over an investigation. We will post a link to a video of that press event as soon as possible.

We also discussed Sunday morning’s fatal officer-involved shooting. We anticipate a possible update from the Elkhart County Homicide Unit as early as next week. As permitted by the Prosecutor, we are committed to sharing as much information as possible from that update, including the names of the involved officers.

We ask for continued patience as this process moves forward and ask the public to think twice before resharing unverified info online. Unfortunately, individuals are incorrectly identifying officers on social media — including those not involved or not on duty. That inaccurate information is then being reshared by others.
We will update the public as soon as we are able to do so. Thank you again to everyone who came out today.

If you don't need to be out, stay off the roadways. Road conditions have deteriorated due to the drop in temperature. Officers are responding to multiple accidents. Some of those accidents are due to drivers approaching accidents in the roadway driving too fast and causing a secondary accident. Please SLOW DOWN!

It looks like an unnerving scam is making a comeback to our area.

This is the scam where you get a phone call telling you that you missed jury duty and have a warrant for your arrest. They use a spoofed number that appears legitimate. This latest version tells you they are from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office. In one case in particular, they said they are Lt. David Johnson.

✅ They are very persistent
✅ They don’t want you to hang up
✅ They don’t want you to consult family or a lawyer
✅ They want to make a money exchange at WalMart or similar setting

This is a total scam that preys on fear. Don’t fall for it. Talk to others in your family so they are aware and don’t become a victim.

The Middlebury Police Department would like to give thanks to the Middlebury Street Department as our officers making their morning commute this morning noticed how bad the roads were all over Elkhart County, until they got into the town limits of Middlebury. The roads were as if nothing ever happened, dry and immaculate. Our guys do such a wonderful job!
