What a special afternoon at Big Creek Elementary as students and staff came together to celebrate Big Creek being named both a National Blue Ribbon School and an OAESA Hall of Fame School.

Principal Bonnie Nagel shared the excitement surrounding these recognitions and reminded students that these accomplishments are possible because of the students who make Big Creek such a special place each day through their hard work, growth, kindness, and Titan pride.

Students also learned they will be celebrating in a big way on May 15 thanks to the support of the Big Creek Elementary PTA.

What does ability really look like?

Big Creek Elementary students explored that question in real ways and gained a deeper understanding of how people navigate the world differently.

Then they saw it in action.

The Cleveland Wheelchair Cavaliers brought that learning to life, showing our students what competition, resilience, and skill look like through adaptive sports.

It was the Portrait of a Titan in action: empathy, critical thinking, adaptability, and recognizing the strengths in every individual.

Big Creek Elementary celebrated Arbor Day with a special visit from Middleburg Heights Mayor Matthew Castelli and City Council President David Bortolotto. 🌳

To mark the occasion, a Redbud tree was planted on school grounds, giving students a reminder of the importance of caring for the environment and the role trees play in our community.

Mayor Castelli also presented Big Creek with an Arbor Day proclamation, and the City Arborist spoke with students about the proper way to plant and care for trees.

Thank you to Mayor Castelli, City Council President Bortolotto, and the City of Middleburg Heights for helping make this a meaningful hands-on moment for our students. 🧡💙

Big Creek Elementary celebrated something new for students. 📚

A ribbon cutting was held to officially introduce a new book vending machine, giving students a fun and meaningful way to choose their own books. Students will be able to earn tokens and “purchase” books, building excitement around reading in a whole new way.

To mark the moment, Mrs. Karnow’s class, the top Read-a-Thon class, had the honor of cutting the ribbon.

A special highlight of the evening was recognizing Big Creek student and self-published author MiaBella Burgio.

Big Creek Elementary and Grindstone Elementary have both renewed their Purple Star School designation, a recognition awarded by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce for a school’s commitment to supporting military-connected students and families.

As Month of the Military Child comes to a close, this recognition is a meaningful reminder of the care, support, and sense of belonging provided across Berea City Schools throughout the year. 💜⭐

Our kindergarteners spent the time at Coe Lake learning from some pretty special teachers. Our own high school students.

Through our Coe Lake Outdoor Science Education course, juniors and seniors lead hands-on lessons that encourage younger students to think, explore, and ask questions about the world around them.

Leadership, communication, curiosity, and critical thinking, all in one experience.

The Book Vending Machine is officially HERE! 🎉 Students will have the chance to earn tokens and pick out their very own books to keep—how amazing is that?!

We can’t wait to see the excitement as our kids discover new stories and build their love of reading. 💙🧡 Stay tuned for more details on how students can earn their tokens!
