Celebrate the Completion of Construction on the First of Six Affordable Single-Family Homes in the West Grove

(Miami, FL October 29, 2015) - City of Miami District 2 Commissioner Marc Sarnoff will join Arden Shank, President and CEO of the non-profit Neighborhood Housing Services of South Florida, Inc. (NHSSF), and Jihad Rashid, President and CEO of the non-profit Collaborative Development Corporation on Monday, November 2, 2015 at 10:30 am, outside a new home at 3346 William Avenue to commemorate the completion of its construction. The home is the first of six affordable, single-family homes slated for scattered sites throughout the West Grove made possible with public and private funding. Known as Village West Homes, all the houses will be sold to income-eligible persons as their primary residence and must remain affordable to persons who are 80% of area median income for 30 years.

The Village West Homes project was allocated $1 million in City of Miami HOME (Federal) funding, administrated by the City's Department of Community and Economic Development. Raza Development Fund is participating with project and construction financing. Half of the property sites were purchased while the remainder were donated by Miami-Dade County and were conveyed to the homes' developer, NHSSF. Affordable residential development has historically been difficult in the neighborhood due to high land values and purchase prices, and much of its housing stock is old.

The six Village West parcels - which are within several blocks of one another - were identified after an extensive search of over 100 potential home sites in the area, including vacant and unsafe structures. The Village West Homes will all feature three bedrooms and two bathrooms, and will incorporate Bahamian style façade features in keeping with the history of the West Grove area, established in the 1880s by Bahamian settlers making it South Florida's first Black settlement and one of its oldest neighborhoods. Each of the homes will sell for up to $238,000, as per U.S. HUD guidelines for the Miami area.

This is one of several affordable housing efforts the City of Miami is committed to in the West Grove area. These efforts include the now completed Gibson Plaza, a new, affordable rental project for seniors along Grand Avenue, and the construction of another affordable rental building off of 37th Avenue to be called Stirrup Plaza II.

City of Miami Launches Monthly Poll to
Encourage Public Engagement

(Miami, FL October 13, 2015) - In an effort to continue its public engagement initiatives, the City of Miami has launched a monthly poll question. The poll question can be accessed through the strategic planning section of the website http://www.miamigov.com/strategicPlanning/ or through the front page of the site, on the left rail navigation.

The poll has two main purposes: To give constituents the opportunity to voice their opinions on a number of issues and to create a fun communication outlet that can be easily used by residents.

The first poll question posted on the website is about the preferred communications method of residents. Upcoming poll questions will encourage residents to give their opinions on city programs, quality of life in Miami and public events. Once users take the poll, they can click on "results" to find out what percentage of people have voted for the different answers displayed on the poll.

"The first step to increase public engagement is to ask constituents how they would like to communicate with the City," said Ines Mato, Strategic Planning and Performance Analyst for the City of Miami. "We have a very diverse population with different communication choices and we want to understand how to reach out to individuals through the appropriate outlet."

The poll is one of the initiatives aimed at increasing public engagement. In the past year, the City of Miami has launched various online tools to provide the public with an opportunity to communicate with the administration. Among the online platforms launched this year is OpenGov, an online performance tool allowing users to see the City's expenditures and revenues through interactive graphs.

Viacom said Monday that it would open a two-stage production facility in Miami, built by the Miami Omni Community Redevelopment Agency in a public-private partnership with EUE/Screen Gems Studios, amid an increasing volume of productions that the company is doing in the Florida city.
