Thanks to new tech innovation, humans can now virtually explore previously inaccessible depths of the ocean floor with the development of highly sophisticated diving robots, such as Stanford’s OceanOne. This “mecha-mermaid," which enables the above-surface controller to not only see but feel what the robot is handling, was recently the first visitor to a 350-year shipwreck, successfully retrieving fragile and priceless objects.

Driven by a love of adventure, innovation, and entrepreneurship, Americans have historically pursued new frontiers. Today, that spirit is alive and well with 54 million Americans working for themselves and untold numbers considering the possibility. Facilitating this pursuit, WalletHub ranked the top 150 U.S. cities, using various metrics to determine relative startup opportunities. Although Miami is in the top third on the ‘Business Environment Ranking’, there is room for improvement in its Overall Ranking of number 70.

eMerge Americas Technology Conference wrapped up its third annual conference yesterday, with standing-room-only crowds drawn by the lure of fantastic new frontiers in innovation. Ray Kurzweil’s futuristic vision was literally mind blowing with his predictions of bigger human brains resulting from a synthetic neocortex. Kurzweil also spoke of current experiments with 3D printed organs, including hearts, which are being transplanted into primates.

Former White House intern spoke about her campaign against cyberbullying, Miami rapper Pitbull underscored the value of self-determination and futurist Ray Kurzweil offered a glimpse into the crystal ball at the final day of the eMerge Americas technology event in Miami Beach.
