SAVE was proud to bring our Guardian Society together for a special evening at ICA Miami for Dolce & Gabbana’s From the Heart to the Hands exhibition.

Thank you to our Guardians and guests for joining us for a beautiful night of stunning art and connection.

The Guardian Society helps sustain SAVE’s year-round work to advance LGBTQ+ equality through advocacy, civic engagement, voter education, and organizing across South Florida. That sustained support also strengthens our ability to help elect pro-equality leaders who will fight for our community at every level of government.

That includes SAVE Action PAC endorsed candidates like former Miami-Dade School Board Member Lucia Baez-Geller who is running for State House District 106, and educator Dinah J. Escarment who is running for State House District 108.

Ruth Shack’s leadership on Miami-Dade’s first lgbtq anti-discrimination ordinance and the activism that followed helped inspire the movement that led to SAVE’s founding.

From the 1977 Human Rights Ordinance to decades of organizing that followed, our movement has always been connected to local leaders and activists who refused to stay silent. The story of SAVE is deeply interwoven with the history of LGBTQ advocacy in South Florida.

Ruth Shack will be deeply missed but we will continue her legacy of fighting for legal protections and equal treatment for those who are gay, le***an, bisexual, transgender and non-binary.

The SAVE team and Board Members were proud to attend “The Truth: Voting Rights, Florida’s New Maps & What Comes Next” Town Hall hosted by State Senator Shevrin Jones

The conversation focused on Florida’s congressional redistricting process, the threat these new maps pose to voting rights and representation, and what community organizations can do to help hold the line.

Florida voters overwhelmingly passed the citizen-initiated constitutional Fair Districts Amendment in 2010 to prevent partisan gerrymandering and protect fair representation, yet the newly approved congressional maps are already facing legal challenges for violating those protections.

As panelist and SAVE Foundation Board Chair Trelvis Randolph reminded attendees while walking through the redistricting timeline, this moment requires all of us to get involved with local organizations, build strong coalitions, and stay engaged long after one town hall or election cycle.

SAVE remains committed to protecting voting rights, fighting for equitable representation, and ensuring our communities are not pushed out of the democratic process.

SAVE mourns the passing of Ruth Shack, a visionary public servant, community leader, and one of the earliest and most courageous allies in Miami-Dade’s LGBTQ+ history.

Long before SAVE became SAVE, when our movement was still fighting to be seen, heard, and protected under the law, Ruth Shack stood with our community. In 1977, as a Dade County Commissioner, she sponsored the amendment to Miami-Dade’s Human Rights Ordinance that added protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation. At a time when LGBTQ+ people were being vilified and pushed out of public life, Ruth used her power to say clearly that our community deserved dignity, safety, and equal protection.

That act of courage helped shape the fight that would later define SAVE Dade’s work and Miami-Dade’s long march toward equality. Even after the ordinance was repealed, the movement Ruth helped ignite did not disappear. It grew stronger. It organized. It came back. And in 1998, those protections were restored.

Ruth Shack’s legacy lives in every person who has been protected by that ordinance, every leader who found courage because she spoke up first, and every organizer who understands that progress often begins with one person willing to take a stand before it is popular.

We send our deepest condolences to the Shack family, her loved ones, The Miami Foundation, and all who were shaped by her life and leadership.

SAVE is looking for student leaders to join our Youth Leadership Conference (YLC) Steering Committee! This is a unique opportunity to build a high-impact event from the ground up, shaping the experience for student presenters and corporate partners alike.

The SAVE YLC conference is Friday, September 25, 2026 at FIU BBC. The time commitment is around 5-7 hours weekly from June 15 to September 30.

Students will gain hands-on professional development and you can also add this to your resume! Also, as a token of appreciation, the student volunteer committee members will receive a $500 participation stipend upon the successful completion of the conference.

SAVE was proud to join Turn Out Broward, a community-led voter registration initiative organized by Hope & Action Indivisible

Yesterday’s volunteer training brought together community members and democracy warriors ready to build grassroots power ahead of the 2026 midterms. SAVE was excited to provide our voter registration self-service kiosks and help train volunteers as part of our expanding voter registration work across South Florida.

Turn Out Broward is about meeting people where they are: at neighborhood events, festivals, health fairs, concerts, and community gatherings where real conversations happen.

Our first wave of Summer endorsements will ensure that we are backing candidates early and entering key races with strategy, infrastructure, and a clear commitment to electing pro-equality leaders who will fight for LGBTQ+ Floridians.
