Established in 1993, SAVE defeated a proposed statute that would have banned anti-discrimination ordinances throughout the State of Florida. In 1998, SAVE successfully lobbied for the Miami-Dade County Commission to pass an ordinance banning d

iscrimination based on sexual orientation. The ordinance was challenged at the ballot box in 2002. In December 2014, SAVE led the charge to revisit the Human Rights Ordinance established in 1998 to add gender identity and expression, ensuring that the transgender community in Miami-Dade is also protected from discrimination. Also in 2014, SAVE helped make marriage equality a reality in Florida as a plaintiff in the Federal marriage equality case led by the ACLU of Florida, the case that allowed for same-sex marriages to begin on January 6, 2015. Hollywood residents joined SAVE at City Hall to speak up for Pride, inclusion, and the programs that help make our city welcoming to everyone.

At the latest City Commission meeting, 12-year-old Eli was the first resident to participate in our Advocacy is Pride campaign. Eli courageously shared what it means, as a young member of the LGBTQ+ community, to see their own city host a family-friendly Pride celebration.

Eli also called on city leaders to take concrete steps to support My Hollywood Pride before Senate Bill 1134 takes effect on January 1, 2027. Passed during this year’s legislative session, SB 1134 restricts counties and municipalities from funding, promoting, or taking official action related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. It also threatens existing local DEI-related policies, putting community programs, cultural celebrations, and events supporting women, Latino, Black, LGBTQ+, and other communities at risk.

For municipalities like the City of Hollywood, this could affect beloved local traditions like My Hollywood Pride. Everyone deserves to live in a community where they are welcomed, respected, and celebrated. We are grateful to residents like Eli who are speaking up now to protect that future.

The Pride flag has evolved over the decades alongside our community. This Pride month SAVE is highlighting the many unique flags that represent the LGBTQ+ community.

From Gilbert Baker’s original eight-color flag in 1978 to the Intersex-Inclusive Progress Pride Flag adopted today, each update has reflected voices and experiences that deserve to be seen.

New colors and symbols have been added to recognize LGBTQ+ people of color, transgender people, people affected by HIV/AIDS, and intersex individuals.

These additions tell a broader story about our community and the people who have shaped it. Visibility creates understanding, and representation helps more people see themselves reflected in Pride.

Throughout history, LGBTQ+ people have made progress by standing together. The Pride flag continues to grow with us and serves as a reminder that our strength comes from the diversity, resilience, and shared history that unite our community.

Hollywood residents joined SAVE at City Hall to defend Pride, inclusion, and the programs that help make their city welcoming to everyone.

As part of SAVE’s Advocacy Is Pride initiative, community members spoke directly to the Hollywood City Commission about the potential impact of SB 1134 and urged city leaders to review every program, policy, partnership, advisory board, event, and funding agreement that could be affected.

Twelve-year-old Eli opened public comment by courageously sharing their story. Their words set the tone for the evening and reminded city leaders exactly who is affected by the decisions made at City Hall.

Stephanie Morris and Jeff Oliverio of My Hollywood Pride also spoke, alongside residents who called on the city to protect its investments in community, culture, opportunity, and belonging.

SAVE was also proud to accept the City of Hollywood’s Pride Month proclamation from the Commission.

Thank you to everyone who attended, spoke, and stood with us. We will continue meeting with city leadership and pushing for concrete next steps before SB 1134 takes effect.

Help us celebrate Pride by volunteering with SAVE at Stonewall Pride in Wilton Manors this Saturday, June 20th. We’ll be at the Vendor Marketplace Festival from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, connecting with community members, sharing information about our work, and helping make one of South Florida’s largest Pride celebrations a success.

As we wrap up at the festival, the ever popular Stonewall Pride Parade steps off at 8:00 PM. It’s a full day of visibility, celebration, and community, and we’d love to have you with us.

We are grateful to the City of Miami Beach and its Commission for recognizing Pride Month and honoring the LGBTQ+ community with an official proclamation.

Miami Beach has long been a leader in inclusion, supported by its LGBTQIA+ Advisory Committee, which helps advance policies, services, and recommendations that strengthen equality across the city.

Thank you for affirming that LGBTQ+ residents, workers, and visitors are valued members of this community. Pride belongs in our cities, and visibility matters!

Ten years ago today, 49 lives were taken and 53 others were wounded at Pulse nightclub in Orlando in one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history.

Pulse nightclub was a place of LGBTQ belonging and on Latin Night, people gathered to dance, celebrate, laugh with friends, and spend time in a community that embraced them. They were sons and daughters, siblings, partners, parents, friends, coworkers, and neighbors and from many accounts they were deeply loved.

Ten years later, we remember the 49 people whose lives were stolen from their families and communities because of a hateful act of violence. We honor the survivors who continue to carry the physical and emotional impact of that night and we hold space for the loved ones, first responders, and everyone whose lives were forever changed.

As we mark this anniversary, we renew our commitment to creating communities where LGBTQ+ people can live openly, safely, and with dignity. At a time when LGBTQ+ people continue to face hostility and discrimination, that commitment remains urgent.

SAVE was proud to attend Senator Shevrin Jones’ campaign kickoff for Congress as he launches his historic run for Florida’s 24th Congressional District.

We are proud to endorse Senator Jones, a longtime champion for LGBTQ+ equality, voting rights, public education, and working families. His leadership has made a real difference across South Florida, and this campaign represents an important moment for representation, equality, and the future of our state.
