Inter-Tribal WIC

Inter-Tribal WIC A supplemental nutrition program providing nutrition education and breastfeeding support to families in NE Oklahoma, SW Missouri and SE Kansas.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a nutritional program for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, postpartum mothers, infants and children up to the age of five. These are critical times for growth and development, when proper nutrition is especially important in order to prevent health problems. The purpose of WIC is to provide supplemental foods

high in protein, vitamins, and minerals (particularly vitamin C and iron to prevent anemia); which will help increase birth weight of infants and to permit maximum mental and physical development. These foods have been carefully selected and are individually prescribed to meet the participant’s nutrition needs. WIC also refers participants to health and social service programs and gives nutrition education lessons on good eating habits to help the ITC WIC Program build healthy families through good nutrition. ITC WIC nutrition education goals are to assist the participant who is at nutritional risk to achieve a positive change in food eating habits resulting in an improved health status and to prevent nutrition related problems. Infants whose mothers participate in WIC weigh more when they are born and have fewer health problems than infants whose mothers did not participate. Children who participate in WIC are less likely to have anemia than children who don’t participate. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) funds WIC, which is run by the Inter-Tribal Council of Oklahoma. The ITC WIC Program is administered at the local clinic level by ITC WIC paraprofessionals located at the Inter-Tribal Council, Inc. Eligibility for the ITC WIC Program is based on income and nutritional risk. Applicants for the program must meet income criteria, set by the USDA, and/or be determined a nutritional risk by a health care professional. Risk criteria include anemia, poor growth, medical conditions related to nutrition, low birth weight, and inadequate dietary intake. WIC is different from food stamps because participants can only buy the types and quantities of foods shown on their food instrument benefit or their cash value benefit. They can’t buy things like soda pop, candy or potato chips. Also, WIC participants can only use their food instrument benefits or their cash value benefit at stores that have a signed Vendor Agreement with the ITC WIC Program. The vendor and cashiers who sell the ITC WIC authorized foods are essential because they help to improve the nutritional status of a member of their community.

👶💤 Did You Know? Your Baby May Show Hunger Signs Before They Even Wake Up!

One of the earliest hunger cues in infants can happen during REM (active) sleep. During this stage of sleep, you may notice your baby:

✨ Moving their arms and legs
✨ Fluttering their eyelids
✨ Making sucking motions
✨ Bringing hands toward their mouth
✨ Stirring or becoming more active

These signs may mean your baby is beginning to wake and is getting ready to eat.

🤱🍼Other early hunger cues include:
• Rooting (turning their head and opening their mouth)
• Smacking or licking their lips
• Sucking on fingers, hands, or fists
• Opening and closing their mouth

Responding to these early cues can make breastfeeding or bottle-feeding easier and more relaxed for both baby and caregiver.

🚨 Remember: Crying is usually a late hunger cue. Feeding before your baby becomes upset can help create a calmer feeding experience.

Every baby is unique, but learning their hunger cues is a great way to build trust and support healthy growth.

📚❤️ A Few Minutes of Reading Can Make a Big Difference!

Reading with your child every day helps build language skills, imagination, and a love of learning that can last a lifetime.

The best part? You don’t have to read for hours! Even 10-15 minutes a day can help your child:

✨ Learn new words
✨ Strengthen listening skills
✨ Build early literacy skills
✨ Create special bonding time with you

Make reading fun by:
📖 Using silly voices for characters
🖐️ Letting your child turn the pages
❓ Asking questions about the pictures
🎉 Praising your child for participating

Remember, it’s never too early to start reading to your child—even babies benefit from hearing your voice!

What’s your child’s favorite book right now? Share it in the comments! 👇

Folate Matters for Healthy Pregnancies🤰💚

Folate (also called folic acid when found in vitamins) is an important nutrient for moms and growing babies. Getting enough folate before and during pregnancy can help support a baby’s healthy brain and spinal cord development. 🌱

Foods rich in folate include:
🥬 Leafy green vegetables
🍊 Citrus fruits
🫘 Beans and peas
🥑 Avocados
🥣 Fortified cereals and breads

Many healthcare providers also recommend a prenatal vitamin with folic acid to help meet daily needs during pregnancy.

Small healthy choices can make a big difference for both mom and baby! Inter-Tribal WIC is here to help support your nutrition journey every step of the way. 💚

On International Day of Action for Women's Health, we're re-elevating two remarkable new studies showing the health impact of breastfeeding for mothers.

A study in Nature identified a specific mechanism behind breastfeeding's protective effect against breast cancer: breastfeeding triggers the buildup of specialized immune cells that can persist in the body for decades.

A second study, in Breastfeeding Medicine, found that breastfeeding mothers had significantly lower rates of postpartum depression, even during the added mental health pressures of the pandemic.

These join a broader body of evidence linking breastfeeding to reduced maternal risk of ovarian cancer, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Baby-Friendly designated facilities support mothers in meeting their infant feeding goals, and that support has lifelong implications for maternal health.
