About to have lunch with participants of PlacemakingUS Group trip. Had my book with me (A History of Little Havana) and showed the regulars of Thumbs up Miami Barber Shop a photo of the shop (and owner Amanda Vargas) that I took in 2011. They wanted a photo with the book!

Do you care about the mural and trees in Little Havana's famous Domino Park? Please read and act! http://www.littlehavanaguide.com/2017/08/13/domino-park-mural-trees/

Locals are concerned about the fate of the historic mural in Domino Park (Maximo Gomez Park), commemorating the 1994 Summit of the Americas, and its shade trees. We've heard of plans to paint over the mural, cut down one of its tallest trees and increase the height of one of the park's walls. The Do...

For I am offering a special walking tour this Friday before our monthly arts & culture festival Viernes Culturales/Cultural Fridays: A Little Havana Black Heritage Tour. It is just $25 for a 3-hour tour and will feature as a co-host the "Ambassador of Cuban Hip-Hop," or Ariel Fernandez Diaz (who lives in Little Havana). "If you want to know everything about Cuban Hip-Hop, ask him," says Vibe Magazine.

I'm the co-author of "A History of Little Havana" and a cultural anthropologist. We will use Little Havana's landscape and stops at all kinds of places to learn in an interesting, fun and engaging way about the contributions of people of African descent not only to Little Havana's history but Cuban and Latin American history.

I have a question for those members of this group who live in Little Havana currently -- especially in East Little Havana (east of SW 12th Ave, north of SW 8th St). How would you describe the neighborhood? What do you like best about East Little Havana, and least about Little Havana?

Read about the history of Little Havana in the newly published book by Guillermo Grenier and Corinna Moebius, "A History of Little Havana." You can purchase it at Amazon or order it from local independent bookstores (if it's not on their shelves already). In Little Havana, the book is available for sale at the Little Havana Cigar Factory (1501 SW 8th St, Miami, FL 33135). Here's a description: "In the heart of Miami, Little Havana is a neighborhood buzzing with culture. Still imagined as primarily a Cuban extension of the city, it has been a sanctuary to refugees since the 1959 revolution and has experienced fascinating changes to become what it is today. Find out how a location associated with old Cubans playing dominos has become a vibrant, multi-ethnic community and a birthplace of Miami's most exciting arts and music movements. Learn why Little Havana has continued to serve as a political stage for thousands of Cubans demonstrating on its streets, like the famous Calle Ocho. Authors Guillermo Grenier and Corinna Moebius trace the history and growth of this Latino epicenter in the first in-depth portrait of a world-renowned neighborhood."

Upzoning fears have led the National Trust for Historic Preservation to name one of the nation's 11 most endangered historic places! We thank the Dade Heritage Trust, the Miami Design Preservation League, historian Arva Moore Parks McCabe and numerous local activists and change makers for their role in helping to get this recognition for Little Havana. We care.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation included Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood on its 2015 list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places, citing a proposed upzoning and a lack of legal protections for its architecturally distinctive buildings dating to the first half of the 20th Cen…

Whether you are a local or a visitor, or someone who used to live in the neighborhood, you can help support those who care about preserving the character of Little Havana by signing this petition. As the co-author of "A History of Little Havana," I urge you to support us in this effort. Upzoning will forever change the character of East Little Havana.

Up zoning: We oppose up zoning. Our position is that the City of Miami and the State of Florida need to assume their responsibility in the following matters: Increased Neighborhood Service Workers; remove debris, pressure clean public areas, repair/maintain public brick/cement & landscape ins…
