Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a National Historic Landmark that preserves its cultural and environmental resources to engage people in connecting with the past, understanding the present and shaping the future. Built between 1914 and 1922 as the winter home of farming manufacturer James Deering, Vizcaya is one of the most intact remaining examples from this era in United States history, when the n

ation’s most successful entrepreneurs built estates inspired by the stately homes of Europe. Vizcaya features a Main House filled with a decorative art collection, 10 acres of formal gardens, a rockland hammock (native forest), mangrove shore, and a historic village that is being restored to tell Vizcaya’s full story and provide additional spaces for programs and community outreach, including those on agriculture. Vizcaya has been a community hub since it opened to the public in 1953; it welcomes about 300,000 visitors annually.

Studio Vizcaya is back with a glow up. 💡

This summer, we're building giant illuminated sculptures together at FREE weekend workshops in June and July— and you're invited.

Join artist Shawna Moulton ( ) as she leads you in the art paper mache to create giant fruit lanterns that will illuminate Vizcaya’s gardens as part of a grand finale titled “Vizcaya Late: The Fruit We Bear.”

No experience needed. All ages welcome.

Would you spend over $26,000 on liquor? James Deering, Vizcaya’s owner, did… sort of. 🍸

Although Vizcaya’s most active years fell squarely within Prohibition (1920–1933), the estate was far from dry. Even with federal bans on manufacturing, transporting, and selling alcohol, archival records show that James Deering was still stocking up.

Two invoices in our archives show Deering spent $975.50 on liquor—equivalent to more than $26,880 today, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation calculator. 💰

But here’s the twist: Deering didn’t drink. He abstained for health reasons, even as he ensured his guests enjoyed the finest food, wine, and spirits. The bottles pictured here—part of Vizcaya’s collection—offer a rare glimpse into the estate’s spirited past.

So how did he maintain such a well-stocked bar during Prohibition? The answer lies in Vizcaya’s location and design. Thanks to goods arriving via the Deering Channel, letters from the era refer to “comforters,” a discreet code name used to order alcohol during the ban.

Even during Prohibition, hospitality at Vizcaya never missed a pour.

This summer, we're keeping the doors open late — so you can experience Vizcaya as the sun sets. Waterfront gardens open until 8 p.m. Local DJ sets. A live artist at work. And delicious bites for purchase from local vendors.

Vizcaya Summer Fridays runs through September. Daytime and evening access from $20. Evening-only tickets also available from $18.

Did you know that Vizcaya's stunning skylight wasn’t part of the Main House’s original design? 🤔

When Vizcaya was built, the central courtyard was intentionally left open to promote airflow and help naturally cool the house during Miami’s hot summers, as you can see in the 1917 Architectural Review photograph.

The skylight wasn’t added until the 1980s, when it was installed as a conservation measure to help protect the historic interiors from weather-related damage. Today, the skylight features an updated and reinforced design that balances preservation with beauty.

But the skylight isn’t the only thing that has changed over the last century. Can you spot any other differences between the Courtyard then and now? 👀
