We send our heartfelt condolences to Officer Hamblett, Wyandotte Nation Police Department, and Wyandotte Nation for the untimely death of K-9 Officer Niko. Officer Niko began his career with the Miami Police Department and transferred with his handler when a job opportunity arose in Wyandotte. Officer Niko spent over 7 years serving the citizens of Ottawa County.

The Great Deer Hunt, held annually in Miami, allows disabled American veterans an opportunity to enjoy a weekend of food, fun and fellowship, as well as the thrill of the hunt. We were asked to present colors at the opening ceremony in Commerce this morning. Thank you Sergeant Buchanan and Officer Cook for representing the City of Miami.

Officer Phylicia Carson was killed in a vehicle crash at about 1:30 am while responding to assist another officer who was pursuing a vehicle.

Even though it’s not ideal, the fact is, that law enforcement is normally the first on scene for someone experiencing a mental health crisis. Currently, the Miami, Oklahoma Police Department has 3 officers who are certified in Crisis Intervention (CIT). Rest in peace, Officer Eastley; We have the watch from here. If you or a loved one are experiencing a mental health crisis, and don’t want the police involved, dialing 988 is a viable option for those who are not an immediate threat of self harm or hurting others.

Tragedy hits the Eastley Police Department. Officer Matthew Hare, 22. was struck and killed by an Amtrak train near the 2000 block of East Main Street while attempting to pull a suicidal subject from the railroad tracks on Wednesday.

The subject had called 9-1-1 at about 5:00 a.m. while suffering a mental crisis. Officer Hare and another officer located the subject on the tracks at about 6:00 a.m. as the oncoming train approached. The officers were removing the subject from the tracks when Officer Hare was fatally struck. Neither the other officer nor the subject was injured.

Officer Hare had graduated from the police academy only five months earlier.

Trooper Jay Rougeau was shot and killed by a wanted man near the intersection of Swamp Road and Baumgardner Drive in Walker Township shortly after 3:00 pm.

At 12:45 pm the subject had entered the parking lot of the Pennsylvania State Police's Lewistown Barracks and opened up on troopers, wounding a State Police lieutenant. During the subsequent manhunt, Trooper Rougeau located the subject in a wooded area and the two exchanged gunfire. Trooper Rougeau and the man were both killed in the shootout.

OK - Miami, Oklahoma Police Department

BRIAN JEFFERY TUNNELL
Patrolman B.J. Tunnell was shot and killed while serving a felony warrant with another officer at the Elms Motel in Miami.

During a struggle between both officers and the subject, the man grabbed the other officer's weapon and shot Patrolman Tunnell. The suspect fled the room. The other officer took Patrolman Tunnell's weapon, was able to return fire, and fatally wound the suspect.

Patrolman Tunnell was transported to Francis Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
