It is with profound sadness that I share the news that our dear friend and teammate, Bill Markham, passed away peacefully this evening, Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at approximately 8:00 p.m., surrounded by his family and close friends.
I met Bill nearly ten years ago, just before he became President of RCPT-USA. At the time, I was serving as Secretary for RCPT-USA. After several years in leadership, I had decided it was time to step away. Then I watched Bill lead.
There was a sea change in RCPT-USA. Relationships grew stronger. Membership exploded. Our credibility within the veteran and airborne communities flourished. Bill had a vision for what this organization could become, and he inspired others to believe in it. I remember telling him that, because of his leadership, I no longer wanted to leave. I believed RCPT-USA was destined for greatness, and I wanted to help build what he had started.
Bill had an uncanny ability to make his ideas feel like they were your own. He encouraged, challenged, cajoled, and motivated countless people to accomplish more than they ever thought possible. Through his personality, determination, and unwavering commitment, RCPT-USA became something truly remarkable.
After six years as President, I also saw the cost of that dedication. Leadership is heavy, and Bill carried that weight for all of us. When I accepted the presidency, it was with his blessing and with the promise that he would remain my mentor and guide. I never imagined I would lose him so soon.
Now the responsibility of preserving and building upon his legacy falls to all of us.
Bill, I promise you this: we'll carry the load from here. You built an extraordinary team filled with talent, dedication, and vision. We will continue what you started, protect what you built, and ensure that your legacy lives on through every jump, every ceremony, and every member who wears the RCPT-USA patch.
Your place in our history is forever secure.
I love you, my friend, and I miss you already.
Please keep Val, Bill's family, and all who loved him in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
At this time, there are no immediate plans for a Celebration of Life. We expect the family to announce their plans in the coming weeks, and we will share that information as soon as it becomes available.
Blue skies and soft landings, Bill. We'll take it from here.
John Hoffstetter, President, RCPT-USA
