Mexico Volunteer Fire Department Inc.

Mexico VFD is located in Oswego County NY, providing Fire, Rescue, and EMS Services. Founded in 1852

The first evidence of the formal organization of a fire department in Mexico was that the Board of Trustees of the Village of Mexico, voted $70 for the purchase of a Hook and Ladder Truck on June 2nd, 1852. This was one year after the Village of Mexico was first incorporated. On December 10th, 1852, 20 men were appointed members of Hook and Ladder Company Number 1. Mexico is one of the oldest volunteer fire departments in Oswego County. Both Pulaski and Phoenix fire departments were also formed that same year.

🔥 GET YOUR HOME READY FOR HEATING SEASON 🔥

Football season is here and as temperatures start to drop, now is a great time to make sure your home is ready for the colder months. A few simple steps can help prevent a fire before it starts.

🏠 Test your smoke & carbon monoxide alarms
🔋 Replace batteries as needed
🔥 Clean and inspect pellet/wood stoves and chimneys
♨️ Have furnaces and heating systems serviced
👕 Clean dryer vents and remove lint buildup
🔌 Check extension cords, outlets and space heaters for damage
📏 Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from heating equipment
🧯 Check your fire extinguishers and make sure they’re easily accessible
💨 Inspect and clear all exhaust vents around your residence

A little prevention now can make a big difference this winter.

Today, we remember the 343 FDNY firefighters who never came home. They kissed their families goodbye, reported for duty, and when the world was running away from danger, they ran toward it. They didn't know their names would be etched into history. They simply did what firefighters do: they answered the call. As we honor their sacrifice, let us never forget that the badge we wear connects us to their legacy. Every response, every training drill, every act of service is a chance to carry forward the values they lived and died for. Hug your loved ones a little tighter today, look out for one another, and remember that being a firefighter is more than a job. It's a promise to serve others, no matter the cost. Never Forget.

PRESS RELEASE:
Earlier today, September 2nd, 2026, at around 11:19 AM, members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Oswego County Department of Social Services, located at 100 Spring Street in the Town of Mexico, for a report of a threat to the building.

As a result, all people were evacuated as a precautionary measure and employees were sent home. The building was thoroughly searched, and the threat was deemed not credible. The Department of Social Services will re-open tomorrow, September 3rd, to resume normal services.

Following investigation, Edward Browning, 29, of Volney, was arrested for Making a Terroristic Threat. Browning was held pending arraignment in Oswego County CAP Court.

The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the New York State Police, the Oswego County Fire Coordinator’s Office, Mexico Fire Department, and McFee Ambulance Service.

Emergencies don’t wait for us to be ready — but we can be. This National Preparedness Month, the Mexico Volunteer Fire Department encourages everyone in our community to take a few simple steps to prepare for the unexpected.

🔥 Build an Emergency Kit
Keep enough water, food, medications, flashlights, batteries, first-aid supplies, and other essentials on hand to get your household through an emergency.

📱 Stay Informed
Know how you’ll receive emergency alerts and weather warnings. Make sure important family members know how to contact each other if cell service or power is disrupted.

🏠 Know Your Home
Make sure everyone knows where your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are located, where to meet outside, and how to get out safely. Test your alarms regularly!

🚗 Prepare for the Unexpected
Keep your vehicle prepared for emergencies, especially as we head into the colder months. A roadside emergency kit, blankets, water, and a charged phone can make a big difference.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Make a Plan
Talk with your family about what you would do during a fire, severe storm, power outage, medical emergency, or other disaster. Don’t forget about pets and anyone who may need additional assistance.

Preparedness isn’t just about protecting yourself — it’s about protecting your family, your neighbors, and our entire community.

Take a few minutes this month to get prepared. When an emergency happens, every second counts.

The MVFD had a member on scene as part of the Oswego County Hazmat Team. 38MC1 (Mobile Cascade Unit) also responded staffed by our members but were cancelled prior to arrival.

One of our FF/EMTs was on scene as part of the Oswego County Technical Rescue Team. Great work by all who were involved, this is a huge team effort between all types of first response agencies!

Today our members put together 2 teams to play in the Sheriff’s Silver Star Association Golf Tournament, this is the union for Corrections Officers and Civilian Staff of the Oswego County Sheriff's Office. All proceeds from this fundraiser go to their scholarship fund which benefits local high school seniors in the county. One of our teams won the tournament playing a heck of a round of golf! Thank you to the Silver Star Association for putting on a fun tournament, hope to be back next year!!

🚨🚨 Incident Alert 🚨🚨

This evening at approximately 6:15pm our volunteers were alerted to a barn fire. 1401 (Car 1) was first arriving chief minutes after dispatch and declared a working barn fire and struck a second alarm. 1481 (Quint 1) was first due with 1421 (Rescue Pumper 1) second due just behind 1481. Unfortunately the barn was a loss but extension to other building and barns was prevented. We would like to thank our mutual aid departments for all their help. Our condolences to Burnt Feather Farms for their loss and wish them the best in their recovery from this. The farm did a fantastic job evacuating horses from a nearby barn and into a nearby field for their safety along with our safety.
