The first evidence of the formal organization of a fire department in Mexico was that the Board of Trustees of the Village of Mexico, voted $70 for the purchase of a Hook and Ladder Truck on June 2nd, 1852. This was one year after the Village of Mexico was first incorporated. On December 10th, 1852, 20 men were appointed members of Hook and Ladder Company Number 1. Mexico is one of the oldest volu

nteer fire departments in Oswego County. Both Pulaski and Phoenix fire departments were also formed that same year.

Today we recognize firefighters all around the world who step up and run to aid those in need. No matter the country, the language, the color of the trucks, or the flag flying in front of the station, we all equally want to be there when we are needed. To those men and women who answer the call, thank you.

In Loving Memory
David M. Horton
December 13, 1937 - February 19, 2026

MEXICO, NY - David M. Horton was beloved and looked up to by more people than he’ll ever really know. Son of the late Donald and Dorothea Ball Horton. Beloved husband to Edna Hartnett Horton. Loving father to David Jr., Douglas, John, Mike, MaryBeth Horton, Donald, and his much loved step-daughter Deanna McKelvey. Endearing grandfather and great-grandfather to many.

David’s first job was setting pins up in a bowling alley in Syracuse. He then enlisted in the United States Army where he served in a tank battalion in Korea. David worked for many years at Cole Muffler before leaving and joining the NY Power Authority as a security guard at the James A. FitzPatrick nuclear power plant where he retired from happily. Even in retirement he took up a job working in Mexico Liquors where many of his friends would stop by just to visit.

He was an outstanding member of his community. David served for many years in the Mexico Volunteer Fire Department as well as serving as Chief. Some may remember him as Father Horton. He was also a member of OS200 as a deputy fire coordinator and fire investigator as well as one of the founders of Donald McFee Ambulance Corp of Mexico. In later years he also spent his free time as a Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 825 of Mexico NY, even sitting on the Eagle Board, and the honorary organizations of Order of the Arrow and the Silver Beavers, helping form young men into great futures.

He will forever be remembered as a man that always loved God, his community, and family above all else.

Funeral Service Information will be as follows:

We are sad to announce the passing of Past Chief and Past President David Horton. Dave joined our department in April of 1969 and served until retiring in June of 1992. Dave was the guy that would do anything for his community. Dave was a founding member of Donald McFee Ambulance in Mexico, serving as Director for several years including its inception in 1972. During his time with the fire department he served as Chief for several years and President for several more. Dave led two of his sons to the fire department where they both served as well. Dave was also a Deputy Fire Coordinator (OS-200) and a Fire Investigator for the county. Our most sincere condolences to the Horton family as they through this time.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Mexico Volunteer Fire Department for their generous donation of dive equipment. This equipment will play a vital role in helping outfit our 13 Phoenix Fire Department SCUBA divers, enhancing our operational capabilities and improving our readiness for water rescue and recovery operations. We truly appreciate their continued support and partnership.
