Friends of Confederate Reunion Grounds State Historic Site

Friends of Confederate Reunion Grounds State Historic Site The original gathering place for the Jospeph E. Johnston Camp, this site is rich with history, from the post civil war gatherings to the Mexia oil boom.

On the edge of the Navasota River, Confederate Reunion Grounds State Historic Site commemorates a place where Confederate Civil War veterans and families reunited from 1889โ€“1946. Today, it remains a gathering place for living history events and family reunions, and features an 1893 dance pavilion, Civil War-era cannon, and ruins of structures from the โ€œRoaring โ€˜20sโ€ and Mexia Oil Boom.

Hello, everyone. We at the Friends of the CRG want to thank everyone for your continued support. Due to all the uncertainties with policies surrounding COVID-19, and the fact we are at a State run historical site, it was advised that we cancel the event for this year. We have found little option but to do so. However, please plan on joining us the second weekend of October in 2021.

Again, thank you for your understanding. This was not an easy decision to make. Reenactments have been held on the reunion grounds since the veterans themselves made them a part of their reunions in the 1880's. The Friends of the CRG picked up the baton and have been running them for the past 25 years, and we will continue to do so for as long as there are those willing to work to put it on and attend. Please continue your support!

If you wish to help with the Confederate Reunion Grounds, we welcome you to become a member of the Friends group. We will be having our annual membership meeting via Zoom on August 1st. If you are interested, please reach out to us.

Thoughts and prayers go out to those at our fellow historic site, Caddo Mounds, who sustained a tornado yesterday during their living history days weekend. Reports are that there were injuries to staff and visitors and complete loss of their visitor's center.

Someone asked the question, "What time period is being portrayed at the annual Civil War Weekend Reenactment?" This is a very good question that should be addressed.

The time period we encourage reenactors to portray is spring, 1864. Namely, the Battle of Mansfield.

During the 1880s-1920's, it is recorded that many of the veterans who met at the Confederate Reunion Grounds would set up "Old Val Verde," the cannon on site, and reenact its capture by the 12th Texas Infantry and General Polignac's Brigade from the Chicago Mercantile Battery on Honeycutt Hill. As a result, that is why the battle involves the taking of the Union gun line. It is this tradition that you help keep alive by participating in the annual reenactment at the Confederate Reunion Grounds!
