Suggestions for Hurricane Preparedness
Some of this may be new to you and some not. So pick and choose what you find helpful and say a lot of prayers. Good Luck to all.
1. Order and pick up prescriptions for thirty days.
2. Buy vitamins and any other over the counter medicine you might need for thirty days.
3. Pay as many bills as you can and get $300-500 in cash.
4. Do all your laundry.
5. Clean out your refrigerator and freezer.
6. Freeze plastic containers with water and put in fridge when frozen. Do various sizes but do large ones first. Do not put all your food in coolers if the power goes out. The refrigerator and freezer are the best insulated storage. The ice blocks will keep your food cold and as they melt, you have drinking water.
7. Fill as many pitchers as you can with water. You can also use milk or OJ jugs if you clean them thoroughly. They do not need to be refrigerated.
8. If you will be evacuating, fill a cup with water and freeze. When frozen put a coin on top. If the coin is in the bottom of the cup when you return, you have lost power and must check your food.
9. Fill bathtub with water and leave a bucket in the bathroom. Use it to flush toilets and sponge bath if water is turned off.
10. Remove knick knacks and glassware from any decorative shelving, as it can fall off and break.
11. Paintings and family portraits can be wrapped in towels and then put in plastic garbage bags and taped shut. Store in plastic bins. They can also be stored, with or without the bins, in the oven, built-in microwave, washer and dryer. Make sure taps are off and electrical breakers to these items are off.
12. Photo albums can be wrapped in plastic garbage bags and taped shut and put in plastic bins. Loose photos can be put in plastic storage bags and put in the bins as well.
13. Store bins on closet shelves, if you can. Clothing can be put on the floor, as it can be washed if there is any flooding. Linen closets are good places to store bins if they fit.
14. Back up whatever you can on your computer hard drive to a flash drive or cloud storage. If you are evacuating, disconnect your hard drive and cords and be ready to take them. Screens and keyboards are easily replaced, so leave them if space is limited in your vehicle.
15. Make sure your "safe box" has all your important papers, insurance info, check books, credit cards, gift cards, and expensive jewelry and that the key is on your house/car key ring.
16. Make sure your income tax records, any business records and any household and medical records are safely stored or packed ready to go, if you have to leave at the last minute.
17. Check your phone and make sure all numbers are updated, including insurance agents, FEMA, Red Cross and any others you may need.
18. Take pictures of everything.
19. Store all out door and patio furniture inside, including yard and garden art, so it doesn't blow around and through a window. Some people put it in the pool, but a gust of wind can blow it into the screen.
20. Move all out door flower pots and containers inside as well, including wreaths and door hangers.
21. Drain 7-10 inches of water from pool and hot tub.
22. Make sure all your devices are charged and that you take charger cords if evacuating. If you don't have one, invest in a portable power bank. (Pocket Juice).
23. Notify a responsible person out of state and make them your contact person. This way if you get separated or someone is looking for you they will have a single point of contact and know the important info. Phones and communications may be severely compromised in the disaster area.
