A BIG Thank You to the Merrimac Highway Department! 👏⚡

Merrimac Light would like to extend a huge thank you to the Merrimac Highway Department for the phenomenal job they did clearing the area below and around the power lines at the well field.

Their hard work helps improve access, safety, and reliability for our electric system, and we truly appreciate their time and effort in getting the job done!

As previously stated, Merrimac Light Department would provide an update once additional information became available regarding the town-wide power outage that occurred on August 18th.

Following discussions with National Grid and review by our engineering consultant, the outage was traced to two fuses associated with a recently installed National Grid metering installation. The fuses were not properly sized for the electrical load they were required to carry under certain system conditions. When Merrimac's backup power supply was called upon during the event, the two fuses operated, resulting in the outage and some customers experiencing “half power” or “single phasing”.

Since identifying the cause, Merrimac Light Department has identified measures that will be implemented to prevent a similar condition from affecting customers in the future. We are also continuing to work with National Grid to review the installation and implement any additional corrective actions that may be appropriate.

We understand that outages of this nature are disruptive and frustrating. We appreciate the patience and understanding of our customers while we worked to determine the cause. Merrimac Light Department remains committed to transparency, reliability, and keeping our community informed.

Please be advised that our linemen are on Birch Meadow Rd doing meter change outs today. If you experience an outage it will be very brief. They will knock prior to changing out the meter and if you are not home they will leave a tag on your door explaining what was done. Reach out if you have any question.

Power outage update: we have requested a formal explanation from National Grid but they were not able to supply full power to our substation earlier. Since they were only able to provide half power, power was shut down until they were able to provide full power again. Once we have a formal explanation, I will share. Just a reminder: we have workers out in the plains area (between Grove and Nichols Streets) replacing meters and doing some drone imaging of the lines, transformers and connectors. They are wearing bright orange Merrimac Light shirts with our logo on the front and back.
