Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana

Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana Meals on Wheels began service in 1977 in southern Lake County, Indiana as part of the Visiting Nurse Association.

We prepare and deliver essential nutritious meals to our community, promoting health, wellness, and independence of all, with the support of a diverse and engaged community network. At that time, meals were obtained from hospitals and nursing homes. As our program continued to grow, it was necessary to open a central kitchen in 1993, at which time we purchased a building in Crown Point to prepare

meals in-house. We outgrew that facility in 2002 when our meal count numbers grew to over 1,200 meals daily for clients living throughout Lake County. We also added child and adult daycares along the way.

We are incredibly grateful to the sisters of the Beta Rho Chapter of Tri Kappa for their generosity in providing beautiful flowers for our Merrillville and Gary clients!

Our clients love receiving special surprises with their meals, and for many, our deliveries are the only in-person interaction they have each day. These flowers brought so much joy, brightening their homes and their hearts.

A huge thank you to our amazing volunteer and staff drivers who helped deliver the flowers and spread so much joy along the way. One even joked that he felt like a “flower girl”!

Another special heartfelt thank you to Amy Bernat Gayda, Melissa Gayda Ossello, Deb Cameron Robbins, Nancy Draper, and Barbara Lazzaro for making this possible.

Thank you, Tri Kappa - Gary, Merrillville, Winfield - Beta Rho, for your kindness and for making such a meaningful impact in our community!

LET THE THAW BEGIN

Sure, it will start with slow drips, but we have a string of mild days ahead of us and compared to where we've been...it will feel like an early Spring! We'll head above freezing (barely) this afternoon with 40s expected tomorrow. We'll likely make a push near 50 Monday through Wednesday before cooler air, but nothing arctic, returns later next week. Enjoy the sun today and happy weekend!

Heads up on this weekend's weather!

WEEKEND WINTER STORM

Happy Friday everyone and happy Valentine's Day! I want to start off by saying, this will NOT be a huge impactful storm for us locally. This storm is hammering California and the west coast with flooding and heavy mountain snows. This storm will bring torrential flooding rains from Tennessee to Kentucky. But the snow component to this storm is there, but it's not anything too crazy. That being said, we will still be impacted by this system weather-wise so let's dive into the details.

Clouds will increase today and I'm expecting snow to move through the Region this evening. We could get a quick coating to an inch or two as this snow times up with your Valentine's Day dinner plans--so keep in mind we could slicken things up this evening.

Snow will then become much more scattered with periods of quiet weather and periods of some snow showers Saturday. As temps begin to warm (barely) we'll mix with some rain at times. Overall impacts Saturday look low. By Saturday night, colder air will begin to wrap into the Region and we'll turn all snow showers with snow showers continuing on Sunday. Sunday looks trickier because we'll be turning colder--the wind will become quite gusty--and lake effect snow will get involved. We could add a few additional inches of snow across the Region on Sunday.

This all sets the stage for very cold air next week that has some staying power. Temps Monday may not get out of the single digits with teens for highs much of next week. We're not looking at a lot of snow from any systems next week but the cold will be persistent.

We'll keep you updated on this weekend storm system--again, not a lot of snow from this one, but a few periods of wintry travel can be expected--this evening and then again Saturday night and Sunday.
