Team Rubicon — the amazing group of military veterans and first responders who have been out in our community helping with tornado cleanup — will not be here indefinitely. Once they pack up and move on to the next community in need, this free resource is gone.

Thank you to all the incredible groups, businesses, and churches reaching out to help our community! We are receiving a high volume of calls and are incredibly grateful for your overwhelming support.

If your group is ready to volunteer, please follow these steps:
📍 Location: Head directly to the Dollar General parking lot at 61st and Taft.

📋 Process: Look for the Lake County trailer. You MUST check in AND check out at this location. The team there will direct you to where your help is needed most.

Team Rubicon is OUT IN FORCE in Merrillville — and They're Here to Help YOU! 💪

Merrillville, we just want to take a moment to say — WOW. 🙌
Right now, Team Rubicon's incredible volunteers are out in our neighborhoods working hard to help clean up yards and properties damaged by the June 11th tornado — and they are doing it completely FREE of charge.

These are military veterans and first responders who showed up for our community without hesitation, and we couldn't be more grateful to have them here. 💙

Don't wait — here's how to get connected:
👉 Walk up to any Team Rubicon volunteer you see working in your neighborhood — they are happy to help!
👉 Call 211 to report damage to your home and request volunteer assistance

Their services are 100% free. They will not ask you for money. They will not ask for your insurance. The only thing they may ask you to sign is a simple waiver allowing them onto your property to do the work.

⚠️ THE STORM IS OVER. THE DANGER ISN’T. ⚠️

The winds have died down and the rain has stopped — but across Merrillville, generators are still running. And that’s exactly when people let their guard down.

Carbon monoxide doesn’t care that the storm is over. It’s colorless, odorless, and it doesn’t warn you. Every year, people are killed by CO poisoning days after a storm — not during it — because the danger felt like it had passed.

If your generator is still running, these rules still apply:

🔴 Keep it at least 20 feet away from your home, with exhaust pointed away from windows and vents.

🔴 Never run it in a garage, basement, or shed — even with the door open.

🔴 Make sure your CO detectors are working — on every floor and outside sleeping areas.

🔴 If your alarm sounds, or you feel dizzy, nauseous, or confused — get outside immediately and call 911.

Don’t assume you’re in the clear just because the storm passed. Stay safe until the power is fully restored.

A huge thank you to Lowe’s of Merrillville for stepping up for our community.

Lowe’s has donated chainsaws to assist with cleanup efforts and is actively distributing supplies throughout the neighborhoods impacted by the June 11th tornado. This kind of local support means everything during recovery — and we don’t take it for granted.

🤝 GREAT NEWS FOR STORM-IMPACTED RESIDENTS

If your property took a hit from the June 11th tornado, help is on the way — and it won’t cost you a thing.

Team Rubicon is coming to Merrillville.

If you’re not familiar with them, Team Rubicon is a veteran-led disaster response organization made up of military vets and first responders who show up after disasters and get to work. They’ve earned a 4-Star Charity Navigator rating and have responded to hundreds of disasters nationwide since 2010. These are serious, credentialed people — and they’re here for you.

Here’s how it works:
Volunteers will be canvassing storm-damaged neighborhoods door to door. If they knock on yours, here’s what to know:

💲 Zero cost. Their services are completely free — no invoices, no hidden fees, nothing.
🚫 No insurance info needed. Don’t offer it. They won’t ask for it.
✍️ One form. The only thing they’ll ask you to sign is a Right of Entry waiver — standard language giving them permission to work on your property.

How to recognize them: Look for the grey shirts and official Team Rubicon ID. That’s your Greyshirt.

⚠️ One more thing — stay sharp.

Storm chasers and scam contractors are still working these neighborhoods. Anyone pushing you to sign a paid contract or hand over cash deserves a second look. Before you sign anything with a contractor, call the Merrillville Planning & Building Department at 219-769-3631 to verify they’re licensed to work here.

🤝 COMMUNITY UPDATE: Free Cleanup Help Is Coming to Merrillville! 🤝

We have some great news for our residents in the areas impacted by the June 11th tornado — Team Rubicon is coming to Merrillville to help with cleanup and debris removal, and it will not cost you a single penny.

Who is Team Rubicon?
Team Rubicon is a nationally recognized, veteran-led humanitarian organization made up of military veterans and first responders — known as “Greyshirts” — who deploy across the country to help communities recover after disasters. They hold a 4-Star Charity Navigator rating and have responded to hundreds of disasters since their founding in 2010. They are the real deal, and we are proud to have them here.

What to Expect When They Come to Your Door:
Team Rubicon volunteers will be going door-to-door in the damaged areas to ask if you need help with property cleanup. Here is exactly what their visit will look like:

✅ Their services are completely FREE — they will never ask you for payment of any kind.
✅ They will NOT ask for your insurance information — do not give it to them, because they will not need it.
✅ The ONLY thing they will ask you to sign is a standard “Right of Entry” waiver — a simple form that gives their volunteers legal permission to enter your property to perform the cleanup work. That’s it.

How to Spot a Real Team Rubicon Volunteer:
Legitimate Team Rubicon Greyshirts will be clearly identified — look for their grey shirts and official Team Rubicon identification.

⚠️ STAY ALERT — Scammers Are Still Out There
While Team Rubicon is here to help for free, please remember that storm-chaser scammers are also in the area. If anyone comes to your door asking for cash, pressuring you to sign a paid contract, or claiming to be a contractor offering repairs — STOP and verify them first.

Before you sign anything or hand over any money to ANY contractor, call the Town of Merrillville Planning & Building Department at 219-769-3631 to confirm they are licensed to work in our town. If something feels off, trust your gut and make that call.
