Is there a superhero hiding in your house right now? Cape optional. ❤️

Some dogs are naturally great candidates for blood donation — including familiar faces like:
Golden Retrievers
Irish Wolfhounds
Airedale Terriers
Greyhounds
Dobermans
Labradors
Pitbulls
Boxers

(Though hero status isn’t only about breed.)

In general, donor dogs are:
✔️ Over 50 pounds
✔️ Healthy and between 1–7 years old
✔️ Up to date on vaccines
✔️ Comfortable being handled and hanging out for a short visit

A calm dog, a caring owner, and one donation can help another family keep their best friend close during a medical emergency.

🐾 Meet One of Our Local Heroes: Silver

Just look at that face. ❤️

Today we’re celebrating Silver, a canine blood donor helping dogs right here in the Treasure Valley.

Every donor dog has their own personality, and Silver brings plenty of heart (and curiosity). Behind every successful donation is a dog willing to show up — and a caring human willing to say “yes” to helping another family’s best friend.

We thank you for trusting us with your pup and for supporting this lifesaving mission. Your willingness to participate means another dog may get a second chance during surgery, illness, trauma, or emergency care.

We’re proud to have Silver as part of our Canine Blood Heroes family. ❤️

🐾 Partnering with Veterinary Clinics to Help More Dogs

To the veterinarians, technicians, and clinic teams serving Boise and the Treasure Valley — we’d love to work alongside you.

At Canine Blood Heroes Boise, our mission is to build a local network of healthy canine donors to help address the critical need for blood transfusions in veterinary medicine, providing hope and second chances for dogs in need.

Here’s how we can support your clinic:

✔️ Educate your clients about the importance of canine blood donation and what makes a good donor candidate.

✔️ Help identify potential donor dogs who meet the clinical criteria for safe donation.

✔️ Work directly with your veterinary team by scheduling Chelsea to perform blood collections right in your clinic.

Our goal is simple: make canine blood donation more accessible, collaborative, and available when emergencies happen.

If your clinic would like to learn more about becoming part of our donor network, we’d welcome the conversation. Together, we can help ensure lifesaving blood is available when local dogs need it most.

❤️ DID YOU KNOW? Healthy canine blood donors can safely give blood every 6–8 weeks.

That schedule is carefully designed to allow a dog’s body time to fully replenish blood volume and red blood cells between donations — helping keep donor dogs healthy while maintaining a reliable supply for emergencies.

Why does this matter?

Veterinary clinics never know when blood will be urgently needed. A dog facing trauma, surgery, internal bleeding, severe anemia, or illness may need a transfusion with little notice.

Having a network of regular local donors means lifesaving blood can be available when minutes matter.

That’s why our canine blood heroes are so important to the Treasure Valley veterinary community.

❤️ Sometimes, love shows up in unexpected ways.

At the end of a recent canine blood donation, something remarkable appeared in the collection bag — a heart-shaped pattern.

A quiet reminder of what this work is really about.

Using advanced veterinary collection equipment, we safely collect 450 mL of blood, which is carefully prepared and ready for its lifesaving mission. That donation may help a local dog facing surgery, trauma, severe illness, or emergency blood loss.

The process is clinical, carefully monitored, and guided by experienced veterinary professionals.

But beyond the technology is something harder to measure: the generosity of donor dogs, the trust of their families, and the shared commitment to helping another best friend get a second chance.

There’s a lot of love in the donation process. And sometimes, it shows itself. ❤️

❤️ Is Your Dog a Good Candidate to Help Save Another Dog?

Many dogs can be excellent candidates for canine blood donation — and the process is simple, safe, and can make a lifesaving difference for dogs facing surgery, injury, illness, or emergency treatment.

Your dog may be a great fit if they are:

✔️ Healthy and happy
✔️ Over 50 pounds
✔️ Between 1–7 years old
✔️ Comfortable relaxing and staying still for about 10 minutes

One donation can support multiple dogs in need — right here in Boise and the Treasure Valley.

Curious if your dog might qualify? We’re always happy to answer questions and help you learn more.

Today we’re shining a spotlight on Tika, one of our incredible canine blood donors here in the Treasure Valley.

Tika not only looks calm and collected in front of the camera, but is also helping make lifesaving care possible for others. When veterinarians face emergencies involving surgery, trauma, severe illness, or blood loss, donor dogs like Tika help provide options when time matters most.

Being a blood donor isn’t flashy. It’s showing up, staying calm, and helping another family get more time with their best friend.

We’re proud of dogs like Tika — and grateful to their families who make this possible.

Behind every canine blood donation is a team of caring hands.

Today, we want to recognize the veterinary technicians and clinic teams who help make this work possible.

From helping donor dogs feel calm and comfortable to supporting blood collections and patient care, vet techs make an enormous difference — not only for donor dogs, but for the dogs whose lives may depend on a transfusion.

As Chelsea shares:

“I work with skilled veterinarians, compassionate technicians, and devoted volunteers who share this commitment to the health and well-being of our dogs. Building a network of healthy canine donors takes a community. I'm grateful for the veterinary professionals across the Treasure Valley who partner with us to provide healing and second chances for dogs in need."

If you’re a veterinary technician, clinic team member, or volunteer helping support this mission — thank you. ❤️

❤️ DID YOU KNOW?

Dogs can have more than 12 different blood types.

That matters because, just like people, dogs need compatible blood during transfusions. In emergencies involving trauma, surgery, illness, or blood loss, having the right donor available can make treatment safer and more effective.

Some dogs have blood types that make them especially valuable donors because their blood can help a wider range of canine patients.

That’s one reason blood donation matters — and why local donor dogs play such an important role in helping veterinarians save lives across the Treasure Valley.

At Canine Blood Heroes Boise, we work alongside veterinary teams and dog parents to help make blood donation safe, accessible, and available when it matters most.

Here’s how we serve our community:

🩸 Blood Collection at Your Vet’s Office
We coordinate blood donations in a familiar veterinary setting, helping make the process comfortable and convenient for dogs and their people.

🩺 Screening & Testing for Your Dog’s Health
Donor dogs receive health screening and testing to help ensure they are healthy candidates for donation and ready to help another dog in need.

📚 Education & Awareness
Many pet owners don’t realize dogs can donate blood. We’re working to change that through education, outreach, and sharing the stories of our local canine heroes. (We had a great time meeting folks at the Idaho Pet Expo a couple of weeks ago.)

🚨 Emergency Support
When urgent blood needs arise, time matters. We help support veterinarians and pet families by connecting lifesaving donor resources when they’re needed most.

Behind every service is one goal: helping more dogs get the care they need — and more families get more time with the pets they love.

Visit our website to learn more about our mission, meet local donor dogs, and get in touch.
