đź”¶U.S. 24/K-4 ramp changes rescheduled to begin next week

Ramp changes on the Kansas Department of Transportation’s U.S. 24 reconstruction project in Shawnee and Jefferson counties have been rescheduled to begin on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

On that date, the on-ramp to eastbound U.S. 24 at the K-4/Calhoun Bluff Road junction will reopen to traffic. Crews will then close the eastbound U.S. 24 exit ramp to northbound K-4. The exit is expected to remain closed until late December.

During the closure, motorists can follow the marked detour north on Topeka Boulevard and east on N.E. 46th Street, or use alternate routes that are not marked.

The eastbound U.S. 24 ramps to and from K-4/Oakland Expressway that were previously closed in March will remain closed until December.

All project work and traffic changes are conditions permitting.

This afternoon, Rock Creek Fire responded to a camper on fire in the 12000 Blk of K4 Highway. Upon arrival two large 5th wheel campers were fully involved with fire. With the assistance of Valley Falls Fire and Jefferson County Emergency Management the fire was extinguished with no injuries.

đź”¶Traffic changes planned on U.S. 24 project in Shawnee, Jefferson counties

Traffic changes are expected to begin this week in areas of the Kansas Department of Transportation’s U.S. 24 reconstruction project in Shawnee and Jefferson counties.

On Friday, Aug. 29, Wilson Road in Grantville will close for approximately two weeks while crews work on U.S. 24 at the intersection. Motorists will be directed to Barton Road, which will temporarily reopen during the closure.

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 2, the on-ramp to eastbound U.S. 24 at the K-4/Calhoun Bluff Road junction will reopen to traffic. Crews will then close the eastbound U.S. 24 exit ramp to northbound K-4. The exit is expected to remain closed until late December.

Timing storms today remains challenging. Generally, storms this morning/afternoon not expected to be severe. Best chance for severe storms is this evening/overnight along a frontal boundary. Damaging wind is the primary concern. Check back for updates through the day.

An active next 24 hours is shaping up for the area with several rounds of storms expected across the area. First round will be in the overnight and early morning hours Tuesday, and the next round will be Tuesday evening and night. Some of the storms could produce large hail, strong winds, heavy rain, and a few tornadoes.
