We previously shared the graphic below but did not include the overvotes or undervotes. We want to explain what those are why they matter.
Undervotes are typical in any campaign, it’s when the voter selects less candidate(s) to vote for than they are able to. These voters most likely voted for 0 or 1 of the candidates for council, which is absolutely normal and happens all the time.
What we are concerned with is the number of overvotes reported. An overvote is when the voter fills in more than the ovals they are allowed for that elected position, therefore rendering their ballot invalid and it’s removed from the count. This typically happens when the voter is confused by a ballot and is rarely their intention. It’s also why we fought so hard for a legal and fair ballot in our election. We had the line ballots and not the box ballots that every other county in New Jersey had on June 2nd. Thanks to County Clerk Pamela Lampitt, a taxpayer paid position who makes a six figure salary, who designed an illegal ballot. We’ve brought this to the attention of Louis Cappelli Jr., the rest of the Camden County Government and Donald Norcross — but they still moved forward with the line ballots and not the box ballots. A difference of 24 votes could have completely changed the outcome of our election — for any of the candidates involved. Which begs the question, why didn’t the other candidates say anything about the illegal ballots? We’re all Democrats here.
We are frustrated that instead of fair ballots for all candidates involved, 12 ballots were deemed invalid and not counted. Merchantville taxpayers and voters deserve better.
