988 is saving lives in New Jersey and nationwide. Between 2022 and 2024, there were 4,000 fewer su***des than projected among adolescents and young adults. States with the highest increase in 988 calls saw the greatest reductions in su***des. https://insact.us/4vodtDI

But prevention alone is not enough.

Individuals experiencing mental health crises need someone to call, someone to respond, and a safe place for help. That’s the continuum of care proven to work. And in New Jersey, a critical leg of that system, a safe place for help, is at risk without $35 million to fund crisis receiving centers. One has already opened, and four more are planned.

Crisis receiving centers save lives, save money, and reduce strain on hospital emergency departments and police departments by directing mental health and substance use crises to facilities designed for recovery. Tell state lawmakers to support the $35 million that will keep these centers open.

988 crisis response saves lives. And we are calling on New Jersey lawmakers to deliver $35 million to ensure that system continues to function for everyone — including New Jersey’s youth.

Between 2022 and 2024, projected su***des among young people dropped by 11% nationwide; that translates to more than 4,000 lives saved. The more 988 calls a state received, the greater the drop in su***des among adolescents and young adults — up to 18.2% in states with the highest increase in answered calls. https://insact.us/4vodtDI

In the same 2 years, 988 calls in New Jersey almost doubled. That means more people than ever are reaching out for help, and state lawmakers need to answer. A fully funded crisis system will provide New Jerseyans with the right help, in the right place, at the right time.

The numbers are clear. Investing in crisis response saves lives. Tell your legislators that New Jersey can’t afford to wait.

As we here at NJAMHAA continue our 75th anniversary celebration, we would like to share some testimonials from those whom we have worked with closely over the years to ensure that New Jerseyans who need help get the care that they need. :

“NJAMHAA has been more than an advocate; they have been a true ally. Their fierce determination and leadership have strengthened our field, uplifted our workforce, and ensured that those who often feel unseen have a powerful voice behind them. In recognition of Month, NJAMHAA wishes to stress the importance of the continued funding of the state’s LGBTQIA+ 988 hotline, as according to The Trevor Project most recent survey, 36% of LGBTQ+ young people, including 40% of transgender and nonbinary young people, seriously considered attempting su***de in the past year.

The survey also states that 44% of LGBTQ+ young people who wanted mental health care in the past year could not get it.

The importance of the state’s LGBTQIA+ 988 hotline to the community — and all other ways to access mental healthcare and substance use treatment services — cannot be stressed enough. Every service and resource is a vital lifeline to ensure everyone can find the support they need.
