City of Mercer Island

City of Mercer Island The official page for the City of Mercer Island, WA. Stunning views of Seattle, the Cascades, Mount Rainier and Lake Washington abound.

At five miles long and two miles wide, Mercer Island is a true family-oriented island community consisting mostly of quiet residential neighborhoods, along with 475 acres of parks and open space, developed shoreline, and a commercial business district at the northern end with multi-family living options. Mercer Island has its own sense of identity, distinct from its neighbors, Seattle and Bellevue

. Home to 22,000 people, it is widely recognized as one of Washington State’s most pleasant residential communities, with an outstanding School District, and active citizen engagement on volunteer boards and commissions. Sustainability is taken seriously on the island: for over a decade, green choices have become part of City operations, and in 2012 the Mayor's Sustainability Task Force generated a comprehensive set of policy recommendations to guide future actions, resource use, carbon footprint reduction, and maintain a healthy community. Well-known local events include the two-day Summer Celebration! festival, the Leap for Green environmental fair, many activities and programs at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center, and a very popular Farmers Market.

⚽ The World Cup has officially arrived in Seattle! ⚽

The very first tournament match kicks off this Monday, June 15, at noon at Seattle Stadium (Lumen Field). Whether you are heading to the game or just navigating your Monday routine, here is what Mercer Island residents need to know to handle the match-day traffic and parking

🚆 Going to the Game? Take the Light Rail!
With massive crowds expected at the stadium, taking the Link Light Rail from Mercer Island Station is your absolute best bet. If you plan to park near the station, make sure you know your options:

Mercer Island Park & Ride: Expect this lot to be completely full on match days.

Town Center Parking Area: On match days, the first two hours of parking are free with registration. After two hours, a $25 daily rate applies.

Mercer Island Community & Event Center (MICEC): The public can park here on game days on a first-come, first-served basis starting 4 hours before kickoff (8:00 AM). Cost: FREE for Mercer Island residents! Non-residents pay $25 per game.

Not heading to the match? Try to avoid the Town Center and the I-90 corridor around the station during the late morning and late afternoon. Heavy congestion is highly likely as fans travel to and from the stadium.

🥵 HEAT ADVISORY: SUNDAY 11 AM – TUESDAY 5 AM 🥵

Mercer Island and Western Washington are under a National Weather Service Heat Advisory, with temperatures expected to climb into the upper 80s and low 90s.

🏢 Need to cool off? The Mercer Island Community and Event Center (MICEC) will be open this Monday, June 15, as a cooling center until 7 p.m. Stop by to cool off in an air-conditioned space!

Stay safe and beat the heat:

🥤 Hydrate: Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.

🏠 Stay in the shade: Avoid direct sun during peak hours; check on vulnerable neighbors and relatives.

🚗 Look Before You Lock: Never leave children or pets in a parked car for any reason.

⏰ Shift Your Schedule: Reschedule strenuous outdoor activities to early morning or late evening.

⚠️ Heat stroke is a medical emergency. If you or someone you know shows signs of severe heat illness, move to a cool area and call 911 immediately.

Hot weather is here! The temperatures are forecast to rise into the upper 80s (possibly hitting 90 degrees) over the next few days. As you head to the Mercer Island shoreline to cool off, stay alert to hidden dangers. The Mercer Island Police Department’s Marine Patrol Unit actively patrols the coast to keep the public safe and has already removed tons of debris left by recent flooding. However, submerged hazards may still be present, risking entanglement or drowning.

Remember that Lake Washington remains deceptively cold beneath the surface, which can quickly trigger muscle failure or hypothermia, even if the air temperature is hot. Preventable drownings remain elevated across King County, with Lake Washington accounting for nearly 30% of recent open-water fatalities. Exercise caution by never swimming alone, using a lifejacket, and staying within designated swimming areas and close to shore. A new community-inspired amenity has been added to the Luther Burbank Park, thanks to the generosity of Mercer Island resident Henry Keena, who donated, built, and installed a “Dog Stick Library” for visiting dogs (and their owners) to enjoy. The unique addition was created in remembrance of the Keena family dog, Ellie, who loved fetching sticks in the park.

The installation adds a playful and personal touch to the space while celebrating the special connection many community members share with the park and their pets. The installation is located in the off-leash area in the park’s north end. Dog owners are welcome to take a stick and, when possible, return the stick to the library or add a new one (please refrain from removing branches from live trees). Phase two of restoration work is officially underway along the forested edge of Aubrey Davis Park near the I-90 Westbound on-ramp. This ongoing Urban Forestry effort focuses on improving ecosystem health, habitat quality, and long-term resilience in this beloved community space.

City contractors recently cleared invasive weeds across 2.3 acres, tackling aggressive plants that have been crowding out native species in the area's dry soils. Building on earlier restoration milestones, including selective thinning, heavy mulching, and irrigation repairs, this phase ensures new native plantings can successfully thrive.
