Harvard's EDPs are off the charts. He ranks in the Top 3% of the breed for Calving Ease, Top 4% for Milk and Top 10% for Marbling to name a few. An overall complete bull, Harvard is the product of our mission to command genetic excellence from “The Ring to The Rail.”

Out of more than 250 bulls exhibited at the 2024 International Brahman show, Harvard was named the Reserve Senior Yearling Champion, and was the highest placing Polled bull of the entire 2024 Show, grey or red. An incredible honor for a truly remarkable bull! In 2025, Harvard was named Grand Champion Grey Bull at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show.

This powerful bull is sired by the National Champion and Register of Renown Sire, “The Graduate,” +JDH Mr. Manso 840. The dam to Polled Harvard is ECC SB Polled Brooke 355/9 (PP), a former show heifer that we own with Simpson Brahmans. Brooke is Homozygous Polled which allowed us to select our pick of any Brahman bull in the breed to achieve a Polled calf, and the resulting offspring certainly did not disappoint! Brooke is the result of crossing ECC El Caporal 301 (S) who is one of our most influential sires over the 2017 International Reserve Intermediate Champion Female, ECC Polled Corinne 595 (P).

How Much Is the Perception of Low Marbling Limiting the Use of Brahman Genetics? 🥩

Maternal ability, productive longevity, and adaptation to hot, humid, parasite-challenged environments are fundamental strengths of Brahmans. Their Bos indicus genetics distinguish them from Bos ta**us breeds and make them an especially valuable source of hybrid vigor in crossbreeding programs.

Commercial producers value these maternal genetics, yet many hesitate to use Brahmans more broadly in crossbreeding systems because of the perception that their influence—whether introduced directly or through crossbred females—will reduce value-determining marbling in market offspring.

That concern has real economic consequences. In mainstream U.S. fed-cattle production, carcass quality is the primary determinant of value. Marbling largely determines USDA quality grade, which drives premiums, discounts, and access to many marketing programs.

This raises an important question: Does the Brahman breed lack enough genetic variation to improve marbling, or have we simply not focused enough on measuring, identifying, and selecting the cattle that excel for it?

Without enough data, Brahmans with superior marbling genetics may still be judged by the breed-wide perception of low marbling.

Carcass EPDs combine pedigree, ultrasound records, genomic information, and available actual carcass records to predict genetic merit. Genomic enhancement offers a promising tool for uncovering previously unrecognized sources of marbling within the Brahman population.

Selection for greater marbling need not come at the expense of the Brahman’s fundamental maternal and adaptive strengths. There are no known genetic antagonisms large enough to prevent breeders from selecting for both.

Ultimately, progress must be demonstrated in actual hanging carcasses. Results from purebred Brahmans and crosses with documented Brahman content can validate selection efforts, build industry confidence, and increase demand for Brahman maternal genetics.

Improving, measuring, and validating marbling can remove an important barrier to broader use of Brahman genetics in commercial crossbreeding systems. The opportunity is there. Are we willing to do the work required to make it happen?

Did you know? We FARM, too! Three generations picking cotton in South Texas — it doesn't get much better than this!

Mike, Benton (and mostly Burton 😉) have been full pull harvesting cotton here in the RGV and are preparing to head north to custom pick in Uvalde, soon.

It's all hands on deck this time of year! Mother nature does not take breaks and like so many farmers across the country, rarely do we. Memories like these, spending the weekend in the field with your family, make the long days and nights worth it.

All the glory to God! Thank you Jesus for these blessings and another year to grow crops on this land you've provided our family with for several generations.

Also, if anyone has any tips on convincing a three year old that going to school on Monday is more fun than working in the field, let us know! 😂

Have you ever seen a more uniform set of fat steers? 😍 We talk a lot about our purebred Brahman steers on this page but we need to give credit where it's due on our crossbred steers, too! This set of 10 Brahman-influenced steers averaged 1,400 pounds with an ADG of 3 LBs/day. We're blessed that the demand for England Cattle Co. Beef has us sending crossbred sets just like these every month to be processed for BEEF, in addition to our purebred Brahman steers.

Special thank you to Rio Beef Feedyard for helping us finish these steers! The last set of crossbred steers we sent came back with an average grade of USDA Choice and a REA of 13.5. We'll keep you posted on how these guys do!
