Aerial Mosquito Treatment Update:

Last night's planned aerial mosquito treatment was postponed due to strong winds.

For an aerial treatment to be effective, wind conditions must allow us to accurately target the treatment area. High winds can carry the treatment away from the intended area.

📍 The aerial mosquito treatment has been rescheduled for Tuesday, September 8, from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to complete this important public health treatment. Aerial treatments are used to quickly reduce adult mosquitoes in areas where West Nile virus activity has been detected.

PRESS RELEASE: FIRST HUMAN CASE OF WEST NILE VIRUS CONFIRMED IN MERCED COUNTY

PLANNED AERIAL MOSQUITO TREATMENT – THURSDAY, September 3rd, 2026

Due to increased West Nile virus activity, the Merced County Mosquito Abatement District will conduct an aerial mosquito treatment after sunset on Thursday, September 3rd, 2026.

The treatment area includes:
📍Merced
📍Atwater
📍Winton
📍Livingston
📍Delhi
📍Hilmar

So far this season, the District has found 58 West Nile virus-positive mosquito samples, 2 positive dead birds, and 1 positive horse in Merced County, with increased activity in the treatment area. This treatment will quickly reduce the number of adult mosquitoes and help lower the risk of West Nile virus spreading.

The District has contracted with VDCI Aerial Services to conduct the treatment. Residents may see a small twin-engine aircraft flying about 200–300 feet above the treatment area after sunset.

About the treatment:
✅Aerial treatments are used when West Nile virus activity is found across a large area. The treatment is the same type used by mosquito control trucks, but aircraft allow the District to treat multiple communities quickly.
✅The product used is EPA-registered and approved for public health mosquito control. When used according to the label, it is safe for use around people and pets. Residents may choose to stay indoors during the treatment as an extra precaution.

Help protect yourself from West Nile virus:
🦟Use an EPA-registered insect repellent with 30% DEET, 20% Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.
💧Dump and drain standing water around your home every week.
