At our last City Council meeting, council members recognized this year’s Volunteers of the Year, and I was incredibly proud to nominate Chuck Herman for District 5.

For nearly 50 years in Merced, Chuck has dedicated his life to serving others. A 23-year Air Force veteran, his commitment to service didn’t stop there, it only grew. While he’s involved in countless organizations across our community (nine to be exact), what stands out most is how he shows up, time and time again, for the people who need it most.

I’ve seen it firsthand at PAL, where he mentors youth and helps guide them both in and out of the gym, and at the D Street Shelter, serving meals and supporting our most vulnerable residents. His impact reaches far beyond those moments: supporting veterans through DAV, leading a diabetic support group for over a decade, helping seniors with one-time needs and even traveling internationally for mission work.

Nearly 40 years ago, Chuck and his wife, who has since passed, started a Thanksgiving tradition at the American Legion Hall that now serves over 1,300 people each year. That kind of consistency, heart and dedication is something truly special. He even helped bring neighbors together on his own street by starting a tradition of displaying American flags throughout his cul-de-sac, small acts that create a strong sense of community.

Chuck’s life is a reflection of what it means to give back. His impact can be felt across generations, and our community is stronger because of him.

Thank you, Chuck, for your years of service, your generosity and your unwavering commitment to Merced.

Rack Room Shoes is officially open at the Shoppes@Merced, with their grand opening this Saturday, March 28 at 10 a.m.

Following the openings of Five Below and ULTA Beauty, it’s great to see this space continue to fill in and bring new life to the area. Seeing more people shop local and keep their dollars in Merced is exactly what we’ve been working toward.

A big thank you to Sage Investco for continuing to invest in Merced and helping bring this vision to life in District 5.

Congratulations to Hola Cafecito on celebrating their one-year anniversary!

What an incredible milestone for this wonderful downtown business. They’ve quickly become a staple in our community, and every time you walk in you’re greeted with such a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Personally, I can’t resist their café con leche or an iced matcha latte — two of my favorites on the menu! ☕️🍵

Thank you for bringing great coffee, great energy and a beautiful gathering space to Downtown Merced. Cheers to many more years ahead!

A long but very productive day in Sacramento with Mayor Serratto, Councilmember Smith and County Supervisor Josh Pedrozo, along with City Manager Scott McBride, Executive Director, Stacie Guzman from MCAG and Merced County CEO Mark Hendrickson.

We spent the day meeting with Assemblymembers, Senators and the Governor’s Office to talk about all things High-Speed Rail and what it means for Merced and the Central Valley.

These conversations matter. High-Speed Rail will continue to be an important topic moving forward, and it’s critical that we maintain strong communication and relationships with the elected officials who represent our region.

While today was about advocacy and discussion, it also shows the importance of making sure Merced’s voice is heard and that our community is not forgotten.

Grateful for the opportunity to be part of these conversations and work alongside colleagues who are committed to our region’s future.

ICYMI: Five Below officially opened last week, and ULTA Beauty is now open, with their grand opening this Friday, February 13th!

It’s been great to see this part of the mall fill up and the parking lot busy with people shopping locally. Five Below was a fun stop (art supplies and sweet treats ✔️), Mayor Serratto found a travel pillow and Councilmember Harris left with some Oreos 😂.

Grateful for the continued investment in Merced, and more to come soon!

Five Below is officially open, and ULTA Beauty opens this Friday!🛒🛍️

It’s exciting to see this section almost complete, with just a few more stores opening soon — 🥳! Seeing the parking lot full and so many people shopping locally is exactly what we’ve been working toward.

Huge thank you to our City staff for all the work behind the scenes to make this happen, and to Sage Investco for investing in Merced and bringing new energy and opportunity to District 5!
