The Mequon Department of Public Works welcomed over 650 residents to this year’s Arbor Day celebration. City staff, Tree Board members, and community volunteers teamed up to distribute more than 1,000 native trees and shrubs, raffle off three 5-gallon container trees and kids’ baskets, and host 75+ young artists decorating wood cookies.

We were also honored to be joined by Olivia Witthun, DNR East Central Zone Urban Forestry Coordinator, who presented Mequon with its Tree City award, marking 32 years of recognition.

The weather forecast appears to indicate that we will have a break in wet weather, albeit brief. During this break, we wanted to provide some updates and reminders:

🤞Please be patient.
✍️This page is not used for correspondence. If you need to contact DPW, please call 262-236-2913 or email [email protected].
☎️If you leave a voicemail and do not hear an immediate response, it does not indicate that your reported issue isn’t being addressed. Please always provide as much detail as you can related to the location and nature of the issue. We may dispatch employees to address the issue before we can return a phone call.
🤞Please be patient.
⛈️During inclement weather, you may not receive a return phone call if your message does not require one. If we are able to address the issue, we will move on. While we always desire to provide great customer service, during inclement weather, our resources are best employed responding to the issue rather than returning phone calls.
💧It may take several days for standing water in yards, ditches, ponds, etc. to recede. Standing water in those areas are where it should be stored during flashflood and flood events, as opposed to in basements, garages, etc.
🤞Please be patient.
💧Standing water that is slow to recede could be due to a blockage downstream. If you see a blockage, please report it to DPW.
💧Standing water that is slow to recede could be due to lack of downstream capacity. The Milwaukee River level could be high and need to lower before water can move efficiently. A pipe downstream may be full of water, and that water must be able to move efficiently before the water behind it can. The cure for this type of standing water is time and sustained dry weather.
🤞Please be patient.
👉If you have the opportunity, please clean up the grass clippings, leaves, twigs, branches and other yard debris and dispose of it properly. The City’s brush site is open and permits are available for purchase: https://www.cityofmequonwi.gov/publicworks/page/brush-site
🤳If you need to report a wet basement: https://www.mmsd.com/.../contact-us/reporting-wet-basement
If you need to report private property damage due to inclement weather, utilize 211: https://211wisconsin.communityos.org/damage-report
🤳If you need information regarding the level of the Milwaukee River and it’s potential impact to cause additional flooding, or to anticipate when the water level may recede: https://water.noaa.gov/gauges/cedw3
🤳If you need assistance from Ozaukee County Emergency Management: www.co.ozaukee.wi.us/222/Emergency-Management

In the past several days, DPW crews have been working nearly 24 hours a day to address a constant cycle of drainage issues, clean up from storms, prepare for incoming inclement weather, and repeat. As noted, your patience is appreciated 😊

Notice of Sewer Service Overflow (SSO)

Due to the inclement weather yesterday evening, the City of Mequon Sewer Utility initiated bypass pumping in 3 locations.

The intent of the bypass is to alleviate the surcharging within the public system and minimize the impact to private property, including basement backups. The sudden increase in flow is typically due to inflow and infiltration of water from rainfall into the system. The City of Mequon owns and maintains a public sanitary sewer system, designed only for sanitary sewage flow, not a combined system designed for both sanitary and storm sewer.

The bypass occurred at the locations ranging from 9:15pm to 3:00am. There is no anticipated risk to public health and safety from the bypassing, which occurred at the following locations:
• Lift Station F: 12439 N. Circle Dr.
• Lift Station G: 12735 N. Fieldwood Rd.
• Lift Station H: 2932 W. Riverland Dr.

Submittal to the WDNR through the Switchboard will follow.

Property owners that received water in the basement of their home or business are encouraged to report such by filling out an online form available https://www.mmsd.com/.../contact-us/reporting-wet-basement.

For more information, please visit the City of Mequon’s website at www.cityofmequonwi.gov, the Ozaukee County Division of Emergency Management website at www.co.ozaukee.wi.us/222/Emergency-Management, or call the City of Mequon Police Department at (262) 242-3500 or the Public Works Department at (262) 236-2913.

On Sunday, February 1, the Department of Public Works (DPW) hosted a group of local Girl Scouts for an interactive day of learning, games and earning a water protector badge.

The Scouts and their families learned about how pollutants such as leaves, erosion, salt and pet waste impact our waterways and how DPW stives to reduce the pollutants.

Highlights include the introduction of how DPW staff use the City’s street sweeper, brine truck and snow plow truck to eliminate or reduce pollutants, and, of course, how to honk the horn!

If you are interested in learning more about the City’s efforts to reduce pollutants or what you can do to help delist the Milwaukee River as an impaired waterway, follow the DPW page or go to the City’s website: https://www.cityofmequonwi.gov/publicworks/page/stormwater-drainage
