Today, we pause to remember the 343 members of the FDNY who gave their lives on September 11, 2001.

When the call came, they ran toward danger while others were trying to escape it. They climbed the stairs of the World Trade Center with one purpose — to help people in need. Their bravery, sacrifice and devotion to duty continue to define what it means to serve as a firefighter.

We also honor the police officers, firefighters, EMS providers, construction workers and countless volunteers who worked at Ground Zero in the days, weeks and months that followed. Many paid a lasting price for their service, developing serious illnesses from their exposure at the site.

Even today, the toll of September 11 continues to be felt.

Every name represents more than a number. It represents a husband or wife, a parent, a child, a friend, a brother or sister, and a firehouse that lost one of its own.

Twenty-five years later, we remember those we lost, recognize those who continue to suffer, and reaffirm our commitment to never forget the sacrifices made that day.

Today and always, we stand with our brothers and sisters in New York and with every family whose lives were forever changed on September 11.

What an incredible night! 💙

Thank you, Menomonie, for making this year's National Night Out our biggest one yet! Seeing so many neighbors, families, police officers, firefighters, first responders, community organizations, local businesses, and City and County staff come together to celebrate what makes our community so special was truly incredible.

A special thank you to our event sponsors, Lewis Bjork & Family Septic Services, Chippewa Valley Technical College, and Culver's of Menomonie, for helping make this event possible. We also want to thank every community organization, volunteer, food vendor, and everyone who helped create such a memorable evening.

A message from the desk of the Fire Chief:

The Menomonie Fire Department responded to the Menomonie Family Restaurant this morning at 6:14 AM for a structure fire with flames through the roof. Station 2 staff arrived on scene within minutes and quickly knocked the fire down with a hose line. The fire was contained to the cooking hood ventilation system, which exhausts smoke and grease-laden vapors through the roof via steel ductwork. There were no injuries to staff or firefighters. Unfortunately, the restaurant will be closed for a time while repairs are made.

Even more unfortunate is the fact that this fire was 100% preventable. Annually, we conduct fire prevention inspections in all businesses and places of employment in our response area. We inspect 1100 structures during the year to ensure that buildings and safety features are maintained and tested per fire code. Customers in any business should have a reasonable expectation of safety from a fire. Menomonie Family Restaurant has been in violation of numerous building and fire codes for the past several years. Violations include failure to maintain the vent hood extinguishing system and fire extinguishers, and failure to clean the vent hood system. This fire is a direct result of failure to follow our continued requests to comply with fire and safety codes.

We do not conduct inspections to harass or interrupt business. Inspections are done to check on items most business owners don’t think about daily, as they have other things to do. This is part of our job. We do our best to ensure the safety of our citizens and business owners through inspections so they don’t suffer a loss like this.

We sincerely hope Menomonie Family Restaurant can correct the noted fire code violations and make the necessary repairs quickly to get back in business.
