In response to the Covid-19 threat, the Cambodian government ordered a national shutdown of all schools beginning from around April 1. In accordance with the government ordered closure, Champey Academy, too, closed for three weeks in April but, once it became clear that the pandemic did not pose a serious threat inside Cambodia, we reopened our school in order to accommodate our many students who come from very poor families and for whom the order to ’shelter in place’ left them no place to go because of the very poor conditions in which some of their families live.

Once per month when we can afford it, we have a lunch party for all students and staff at Champey Academy. The food, usually a curry dish, is prepared by our very talented female dance teacher, Ms. Kanika and some of her older students. This year we were very grateful to have the support of the Elementary School students from the American School in Tokyo as well as one friend in New York who generously donated funds to sponsor some of these monthly lunches.

Included below are a few recent photos of students participating in their dance, art, and music classes at the Champey Academy of Arts. Currently around 60 students attend the Academy daily, but we expect that number to increase to approximately 90 during August and September, the public school annual holiday period. The young students are enthusiastic about learning and are continuing to do very well in their classes as the year progresses.
