This year, thousands of Vietnam Veterans will cross into the 65+ population—a demographic shift that carries both honor and urgency.

Far too often, aging Veterans fall into gaps between housing options, health care systems and social services. They are isolated, forgotten and alone. In high-cost regions like Silicon Valley, those gaps can widen quickly, where a single setback can lead to crisis and instability.

Chris Flaherty, CEO of Nation’s Finest, shares his perspective in the San José Spotlight on these challenges and highlights how Nation’s Finest supported aging and high-acuity Veterans through a pilot program in Santa Clara County. That support led to greater housing stability, improved quality of life, better health outcomes, and restored dignity.

Congratulations Kenneth! 🎉🏡🇺🇸

- A Navy Veteran’s New Beginning🏡

Meet Kenneth, a 70-year-old U.S. Navy Veteran who proudly served during the Vietnam War. After his service, he continued giving back to his community, working for nearly a decade as a maintenance worker at the VA.

For 15 years, Kenneth lived in a room rental without a signed lease. But one day, he was suddenly forced to move out, leaving him without stable housing. To make matters even more challenging, he also battles COPD, a chronic lung condition that is especially hard to manage without stable housing.

Through our Nation's Finest - Menlo Park office, Kenneth received emergency housing assistance and dedicated support from his Case Manager, Stanley Tang, to help him find a new home.

During his meetings with Stanley, Kenneth often shared how challenging the search had been and how he never imagined facing a move at his age. But through determination, teamwork, and perseverance, he found a new home in close proximity to his workplace!

We are so happy for Kenneth and proud to have been part of his journey. Please join us in celebrating his success!🎉

The results are in from the recent Homeless Veteran Surge, an outreach effort aimed at connecting Veterans in need with critical housing services.🏠

Our Menlo Park team proudly joined this impactful initiative, led by the Palo Alto VA, under the Housing First model — prioritizing safe shelter as the crucial first step in supporting unhoused Veterans.

We are honored to share the outcomes:
• 3 Veterans moved into transitional housing
• 7 Veterans moved into emergency shelter
• 7 Veterans received emergency hotel assistance
• 16 Veterans were admitted to HUD-VASH, beginning the journey toward permanent housing

While shelter provides safety and meets immediate needs, a home brings healing and stability. We’re honored to support our Veterans as they find their way home.❤️

To honor ALL of the Brave Men who gave their lives on D-Day in Normandy, FR.
More men died on that beach in that one morning, 6/6 @ 6am, than in the entire Iraq war.

Dear Nation’s Finest team:
Nation’s Finest is saddened to learn of the passing of one of our team members.
Ryan Sparks, a Healthcare Navigator in Santa Cruz, CA passed away on March 22, 2021. Ryan was a beloved team member, dedicated to providing high-quality services and compassion for the veterans we serve. Beyond that, Ryan was a father, friend, and husband.
A U.S. Army veteran, Ryan continued to serve veterans in his time working for the American Legion in Salinas, CA, and as a Peer Mentor in the Veterans Services Center at Hartnell College. Ryan was passionate about veterans in his community and volunteered as a board member of the Central Coast Veterans Cemetery Foundation, as well as volunteering for the United Veterans Council of Monterey County and the Hartnell Veterans Club. In 2019, Ryan was named Veteran of the Year in Monterey County.
Ryan will be sorely missed by all team members here at Nation’s Finest. Please keep Ryan's family in your thoughts as they go through this difficult time.
