Legal E-bikes are designed to meet specific classifications and safety requirements. Electric dirt bikes and Surron-style vehicles, on the other hand, are often capable of much higher speeds and generally do not meet the requirements to be operated on public streets, bike lanes, sidewalks, or trails.

Knowing the difference matters. These vehicles can pose serious safety risks to riders, pedestrians, and motorists when operated illegally. Across Southern California, agencies have seen a rise in collisions involving electric dirt bikes, including incidents resulting in serious injuries and fatalities.

Before you ride, make sure your bike is legal for where you plan to operate it. Understanding E-bike classifications helps keep everyone safe and prevents costly citations or vehicle impounds.

🚲 Class 1: Pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph
🚲 Class 2: Pedal-assist and throttle, up to 20 mph
🚲 Class 3: Pedal-assist only, up to 28 mph

If it looks like a dirt bike, performs like a dirt bike, and exceeds e-bike classification standards, it may not be street legal.

Ride smart. Ride safe. Know before you go.

Below is a message from Menifee Union School District regarding an incident that occurred today. We want to echo their message of safety and emphasize the importance of reporting suspicious incidents.

"We are writing to inform you about an incident that occurred this afternoon near Ridgemoor Elementary School and to share the immediate steps being taken to ensure our community remains secure.
While walking home from school near Peterson Park, a student was approached by a white car. A man exited the vehicle and began walking toward the student. Recognizing this as suspicious, a school employee who was driving by at that time, noticed the interaction, and stopped to assist the student.

Immediate Actions Taken:
• Law Enforcement Engagement: The Menifee Police Department was notified immediately and has launched an active investigation.
• Increased Security Presence: The Menifee Police Department is providing increased patrol presence around the Ridgemoor campus during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal.
• District Collaboration: School and district leadership are working in collaboration with law enforcement to review security footage and provide any assistance necessary.

How Families Can Help: We ask that you use this incident as an opportunity to review personal safety habits with your children. Please remind them of the following:
• Stay Alert: Always be aware of your surroundings and avoid looking at phones or wearing headphones while walking.
• The Power of Groups: Walk to and from school with a friend, sibling, or trusted adult whenever possible.
• Stranger Awareness: Never talk to strangers, accept rides, or approach unfamiliar vehicles.
• Report Immediately to a Trusted Adult: If a stranger approaches or attempts to grab you, make noise, run to a safe place, and tell a trusted adult immediately.

If you or your child has any information that may be relevant to this ongoing investigation, please contact the school administration or the Menifee Police Department immediately.
The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority. We deeply appreciate our partnership with law enforcement and our community."

June is National Gun Violence Awareness Month.

In an effort to educate our community about firearm safety and promote responsible gun ownership, City personnel wore orange this week to kick off the Menifee Police Department's firearm safety campaign. Throughout the year, we will be sharing gun safety information on social media and at community events as part of our Menifee L.E.A.D.S. initiative.

Together, we can help prevent tragedies through education, awareness, and responsible firearm practices.

Thank you for your support as we work to keep our community safe.

The Menifee Police Department will hold a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint June 13, 2026, from 7:00 pm to 2:00 am at an undisclosed location within the Menifee city limits.

Checkpoint locations are chosen based on the history of DUI crashes and arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired.

During the checkpoint, officers will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

The Menifee Police Department is committed to keeping our community safe and free of DUI drivers. Not only do we conduct checkpoints, but we also send out individual police units throughout the year to look for these dangerous drivers.

“DUIs are 100% preventable and when somebody makes the bad decision to drive impaired; it can potentially have lifelong effects,” said Sergeant Dan Beare. “Driving while under the influence of alcohol, and/or drugs, is dangerous and potentially deadly. It not only affects the driver but so many families and friends too.” Please arrange for a ride if you plan on drinking or designate a sober driver when going out, otherwise you may get arrested and face legal challenges.

The Menifee Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. Always follow directions for use and read warning labels about driving or “operating heavy machinery,” which includes driving a car. While medicinal and recreational ma*****na are legal, driving under the influence of ma*****na is illegal.

If you plan on drinking or taking medications that may impact your ability to drive safely, plan on staying at home.

Drivers charged with DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

Today's e-bike safety operation at a local high school wasn't about taking bikes away, issuing citations, or preventing students from having fun. It was about keeping our young riders safe.

We continue to see an increase in electric dirt bikes and other motor-driven vehicles being operated on public roads. Many of these bikes are not street legal and can reach speeds far beyond what traditional bicycles or e-bikes are designed for. When operated on city streets, they can create serious safety risks for riders, pedestrians, and motorists alike.

Across Southern California, this problem has been on the rise, including tragic incidents involving deaths of riders and pedestrians.

Parents and guardians, please take the time to understand exactly what type of bike you are purchasing for your child. Not all electric two-wheeled vehicles are classified as e-bikes. Some are considered motor vehicles and may require registration, insurance, licensing, and equipment that these bikes often do not have.

Before purchasing, ask:
• Is it street legal?
• What is its top speed?
• Where can it be legally operated?
• Does my child understand the rules of the road?
• Does it have the required safety equipment?

We encourage all riders to wear a properly fitted helmet, obey traffic laws, ride responsibly, and stay aware of their surroundings. A few extra minutes spent learning the rules can help prevent serious injuries and save lives.

Our goal is simple: educate riders, support parents, and keep our community safe.
