There’s still time to enter the MGS Family History Writing Competition.

As you prepare your submission, remember:
• Entries must be based on real research (no fiction)
• Topics should connect to the Midwest, including Minnesota
• Include sources—especially when working from family stories
• Submit one original, unpublished piece

Each entry includes a cover sheet and narrative text. Full guidelines and FAQs are available to help you prepare.

🗓 Deadline: July 15, 2026
📧 [email protected]

Taking time this month to revise or finalize your writing can make all the difference.

What step are you working on—drafting, revising, or sourcing?

As you may have heard, the Romanian Genealogy Society (RGS) has dissolved as a branch group of the Minnesota Genealogical Society (MGS). In its place, we have established the MGS Romanian Interest Group (RIG). Participation in RIG activities requires membership in the parent organization, MGS. All up-to-date members of RGS should have received an email from MGS confirming that their membership has been converted. For those who were not current members, you can join MGS at www.mngs.org, where there is a special membership rate for a limited time.

WHAT RIG OFFERS

Most RIG benefits are available MGS members right now:

— Access to our archive of back issues of the Romanian Roots newsletter on the MGS website
— MGS's print journal, The Minnesota Genealogist (to which you are welcome to contribute!)
— Access to the Hoffman Research Library in Mendota Heights, MN — one of the top genealogical research facilities in the Midwest — which houses our Romanian books and maps collection
— Discounts on MGS conferences, classes, and research services
— Access to webinar recordings and handouts in the Members Only area of the MGS website
— A voice and vote in MGS governance
— All other MGS programs, resources, and special interest groups
Full details at www.mngs.org.

Beginning in September 2026, RIG will also be launching:

— Online meetings focused on Romanian genealogy research and education
— A quarterly RIG newsletter

You don't need to be an MGS member to follow us on social media. We have two Facebook presences:

— The MGS Romanian Interest Group page, where we will announce meetings, events, and RIG news:
https://www.facebook.com/MGSRIG

— The Romanian Genealogy Forum, a Facebook group now moderated by two professional researchers based in Romania, open to anyone interested in Romanian genealogy:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/romaniangenealogyforum

QUESTIONS OR SUGGESTIONS?

We are here and happy to hear from you via email at [email protected]. It has been an honor to serve the Romanian genealogy community for the past fourteen years, and we look forward to continuing that work with you under our new home at MGS. - Vicki Albu, designated contact for RIG
