SECOND DEPOT RESTORATION GRANT PROJECT COMPLETED

Members of the Mena Depot Commission are excited to announce the completion of a second Historic Preservation Restoration (HPRG) grant project. After experiencing many issues with the current restroom facilities and realizing the need for a dependable restroom at the Depot, which also serves as the Visitor’s Center, the Commission applied for a grant to convert an existing restroom into a fully ADA compatible facility. The original grant was awarded by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program (AHPP) in June of 2020, but due to supply chain issues related to Covid, the project experienced delays. AHPP extended the grant award into 2021-2022, and the ADA restroom facility is now complete. The new facility required a renovation of the existing facility, removal of outdated water fountains, and reconfiguration of a storage closet.
HPRG grants are funded through Special Revenues under the Real Estate Transfer Tax passed as Acts 729 and 919 of 1987. The purpose of the HPRG grant is to encourage and promote preservation of Arkansas’ historic resources by providing financial assistance for the restoration of historic properties.
This is the second recent HPRG grant project for the Mena Depot issued by the Department of Arkansas Heritage. The first grant provided new electrical wiring, exterior and interior lighting, water heater installation, wired smoke detectors, and a camera inspection of the sewer lines. Previous grants funds had also been obtained for the restoration of the roof.
