"C" shift on the south side.

Temperatures were a little bit hotter today on the south end of Shelby County in the Preserve at Forest Creek Apartments. A garage area used as a maintenance shop was reported to our dispatchers as being on fire. This was right at the lunch hour and SCFD surged four engine companies, two ambulances and multiple associated Chiefs to the scene. First-in fire fighters reported the building to be fifty percent involved with heavy fire and smoke showing from the front.

A very intense attack ensued, and firefighters quickly had hose lines flaked out and charged. The risk of exposure to adjacent garages and apartments was high and kept at bay. The fire fight was very intense. Among the hurdles was the amount of accelerants stored there. Fuels, lubricants and a variety of combustible material assured that this fire was doing all it could to get out of control. The firefighters focused all their attention on the seat of this blaze the second it was found.

The fire was called knocked down in under an hour! There are no injuries to citizens or fire personnel, and the cause is yet to be determined. The takeaway again today is, to engage the 9-1-1 system the very instant you are thinking that you are in an emergency. Never waste time wondering - get the engines rolling!

Today, the Shelby County Fire Department can proudly report that effective immediately, we have graduated and assigned three new dispatchers and nine new firefighters. A dozen additional highly trained, capable and courageous individuals who are already serving the citizenry of Shelby County, Tennessee.

The dispatch office has already welcomed Alexandria Mason, Cheynese Gordon and Shernita Brown. Going out to their engine companies in suppression are: Ahdai Paige, Hayden Dunham, Torrion Kirkendoll, Henry Franks, Steven Rodriguez, Katie Barrett, Trinity Fields, John Coffman and Jeremy Villalobos.

We want to remind those of you who may not know, that the last half year has been truly grueling on all of these incredible people. We have watched, sometimes from a distance - sometime up close, as they have endured, worked and displayed their individual strengths as well as their team strengths and we are both fortunate and proud to have them among our ranks.

All of Shelby County is strongly blessed to have them in service. Please let them all hear from you. We feel as though they deserve a very well-earned pat on the back and an enthusiastic "WELL DONE".

The Shelby County Fire Department said a very fond farewell to a fellow colleague who has spent significant time and effort helping this and many other responding agencies over the years. Shelby Logan retired today. She spent a quarter century in service to Shelby County, TN residents. She spent well over a decade in the ranks of the Shelby County Emergency Management & Homeland Security Agency coordinating significant grants among other huge duties.

She proved herself a vital and key person in the performance of her work and displayed a level of duty and perseverance that will likely not be matched. Her spirit and dedication reflected greatly on the very tapestry of how she was raised. Her father - a retired Deputy Sheriff here in Shelby County would be quite proud of how her efforts proved so successful over the last 25 years. She will be greatly missed. Some of our Administration here at the SCFD assembled a gift basket for her and presented it to her this morning.

Shelby, we wish you the very best in your retirement and are so grateful to you for how much you helped us and really everyone in Shelby County over these many years. God Bless You and your entire family.

Just after the lunchtime hour Wednesday, Aug 26th at Walnut Grove & Bazeberry, the SCFD dispatched a serious Motor Vehicle Crash with reports of a truck in the water, on its side with entrapment. Responding companies included Engine 65, Fire Squad 1, Tower 62, Unit 65, Battalions 21 and 24 with associated Chiefs, and EMS Leaders and providers.
The patient was extricated with cutters and spreaders and then flown to Regional One Trauma Center aboard the Hospital Wing. He's expected to recover.
It's always very interesting to see the level of intense focus displayed by everyone from the Dispatch Office, the Sheriff's Office, Firefighters and EMS Professionals all coming together to help people in need. Great job everyone... It's what we do!

We have another opportunity to share our pride in two more esteemed colleagues who have worked so very hard to complete their training to become Fire Fighting Paramedics! Kenneth Moment and Joshua Sims have been immersed in their quests to achieve the medical level of Paramedic at Southwest Community College for over a year - and they did it while on the job.

This is no small feat and the command staff here at headquarters as well as our crews throughout our engine companies in unison applaud this high achievement. Moment has recently passed the National Registry and Sims is preparing to take his.

Bravo and Very Well Done Gentlemen. So glad to have you in our ranks. Congratulations!
