Satellite locations to open earlier for general election early voting
Commercial Appeal//Kyle Veazey//June 19, 2014
Early voting in the Aug. 7 Shelby County general election and state/federal primaries will expand to satellite locations earlier than it did in advance of the May 6 county primaries.
The Shelby County Election Commission voted Wednesday to approve early voting to begin on July 21 at 21 sites. That will mean 12 days of early voting at those sites across the county.
The commission approved the plan by a 4-0 vote, a spokesperson said. Commissioner Norma Lester was absent.
There were six days of early voting at satellite locations in the primary, which drew criticism from some who felt it stifled turnout. The Election Commission said it was making the best use of its financial resources in a typically low-turnout election.
Early voting will begin on July 18 at the Downtown site, 157 Poplar. That day and July 19 will be the only two days in which early voting will be allowed only there. The 20 other sites will open on Monday, July 21.
