25 years later, we remember.

Today, Juvenile Court of Memphis & Shelby County joins our nation in honoring the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the families forever changed, and the first responders and everyday citizens whose courage and service defined that day.

May we continue to carry forward a spirit of service, unity and remembrance.

We will never forget.

We enjoyed seeing our CASA volunteers last night at the annual Juvenile Court of Memphis & Shelby County Volunteer Appreciation Banquet. We want to highlight one of our volunteers, Fatima Killebrew, who received the Volunteer Impact Award.

Did you know that there is a real little Loni that makes our “Loni’s Lemonade”? Well, here she is. For every glass of her sparkling lemonade that we sell, we set aside $0.50 that she takes to the nonprofit of her choice.

Loni has saved up quite a few months and chose CASA of Juvenile Court of Memphis & Shelby County, TN for this donation. CASA was the philanthropy for my sorority in college and its cause is so worthy.

If you're not familiar with CASA, we encourage you to look them up and get involved if you have time. The CASA program is part of the court, but works independently. CASA works closely with the Department of Children’s Services, foster parents, therapists, attorneys, social workers, schools, and other professionals involved in a child’s case. CASA volunteers work under the direct supervision of the CASA Executive Director and Volunteer Coordinator to further the child’s welfare and to expedite the case through the system.

CASA‘s role in court is powerful and significantly improves how justice is administered in dependency and neglect cases. Juvenile Court Magistrates use the report to respect the child’s sense of time, avoid unnecessary continuances and make informed, timely decisions regarding the best interest of the child. For children, CASA volunteers are a lifeline in complex legal proceedings offering trust, advocacy, and a means to express their own opinions and hopes. One CASA child noted “To give a child a CASA volunteer is to give them a voice, and to give them a voice is to give them hope, and to give them hope is to give them the world.”

We were honored to be asked by TN Juvenile Court Services Association to speak at this year’s annual TJCSA Conference today in Memphis at the famous Peabody Hotel. We so appreciate Tennessee CASA for their help and coming to our presentation. Most of all we are humbled and grateful for our four volunteers, who shared about themselves and their CASA experience and perspective with Juvenile Court staff across the state. CASA volunteer, Shernita Brown, came by today to pick up backpacks donated by Kappa Alpha Theta Memphis Alumnae Chapter. Shernita is already a superhero. She’s a Shelby County Government 911 dispatcher! And her brother, Shelby County Sheriff's Officer Hulon, is working at Juvenile Court of Memphis & Shelby County today and was happy to es**rt her up to CASA office to pick up the backpacks. The Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity Memphis Alumnae Chapter purchased new backpacks and school supplies for all of the children we serve with CASA!! We are so grateful. Our volunteers are already showing up to get backpacks and take them to the children we serve. Not only is this so useful, it also helps our volunteers to show practical ways in which these children are cared for. Thank you!!
