Mayor want's 20 million but realizes she can't ask for it ALL at ONCE! Last year she said stated she would ask for continuous Overrides.

06/04/2025

For every million dollar ask for an override the average home tax bill will go up a $100. That means for 10 million the average home owner will see a $1000 increase. Don't forget the $900 increase for the Public Safety Buildings. Plus, the value of your house went up by 40% in the last 5 years. Melrose needs by state law reassess all real estate property every 3 years $$$

If the city faces such severe financial constraints that service cuts are under consideration, why is it now offering trash service rebates to composting participants? Why don't smaller households—which generate significantly less waste overall—receive reduced rates or discounts? The city claims insufficient funds while selectively offering rebates to some households but not others. This approach appears to favor subsidizing larger households at the expense of smaller ones, essentially requiring smaller households to cross-subsidize their larger counterparts.

Property owners have already rejected an override request last year, yet the city is proposing another one in 2025. We invite you to join our campaign to once again vote against this additional tax burden.

Do you support increasing school funding but are concerned that others may not be able to contribute? Do you know that an override is permanent and offers no guarantee that the funds will continue to support schools after the first year?

Let us introduce you to the Melrose Education Fund.

The Melrose Education Fund is NOT the same as the Melrose Scholarship Fund. Contributions to the Education Fund will directly support the schools, and the funds will be managed by the Education Committee. Unlike an override, the money you contribute to the Education Fund is designated solely for educational purposes—ensuring it’s used as intended every year.

The Education Committee can allocate the funds for a variety of educational needs, including purchasing Chromebooks, supporting art programs, hiring additional staff, and more—anything approved by the Committee for educational purposes.

We are a city of million-dollar homes, yet we also have two food pantries. In the last override, 4,296 voters expressed their willingness to contribute more for the benefit of our children.

Your quarterly property tax bill has a section to allocate voluntary contributions. If each of these voters contributed just $825—the same amount they would pay for an override—we could raise the $3.5 million intended for education as requested in the most recent override. The Melrose Education Fund ensures that these funds are dedicated solely to educational purposes every year.

Stay Warm This Winter with the Good Neighbor Energy Fund!

The Massachusetts Good Neighbor Energy Fund (GNEF) is now open for the 2024-2025 season, providing vital home energy assistance to households in temporary crisis who don’t qualify for federal or state programs. This year, eligible households can receive up to $400 to help with heating expenses.

Celebrating its 40th year, the "Give the Gift of Warmth" campaign aims to raise $500,000 to assist over 1,500 families statewide. With rising costs for essentials like food and utilities, the need for energy assistance is greater than ever.

Managed by The Salvation Army, the fund is often the last resort for families in need, having helped over 96,000 households since its inception in 1985. Assistance is available to families whose gross income falls between 60-80% of the state’s median income and who do not qualify for federal or state aid. For instance, a household of four must have a gross income between $94,609 and $126,144 to be eligible.
