Next week, our community will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks with a ceremony at Melrose High School at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 10. The remembrance will particularly honor Ray Rocha, a Class of 1990 MHS graduate and member of the high school football team, who was killed on 9/11 at his office in the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

All are welcome to attend this community remembrance before the Melrose High School football home opener, which kicks off at 7 p.m.

It’s time for a slice! Residents of Melrose Ward 5 (the southwest portion of the city around Oak Grove and the Middlesex Fells), Ward 6 (roughly between Main Street and Mount Hood) and Ward 7 (the southern portion of the city between Swains Pond and Main Street) are invited to join your local elected officials over a slice of pizza at Mary Livermore Park between 6 and 7 p.m. today, Thursday, Sept. 3.

‘Slice of the City’ events are early evening, drop-in style meetups at green spaces in each of Melrose’s wards. Join us to celebrate Melrose’s open spaces, engage with City officials outside of formal meetings, and enjoy some local pizza.

Today is Election Day, Melrose! With contested races in the Democratic and Republican primaries, your voice and your vote matter. Today’s winners will proceed to the November 3, 2026 General Election.

All voters can cast their ballot at the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School until 8 p.m. today. If you are still holding a mail-in Primary Election ballot, please DO NOT place it in the mail today. Instead, to ensure your vote is counted in a timely manner, drop your ballot in the red, white and blue secure ballot box outside City Hall or return it directly to the City Clerk’s office on the 1st floor of City Hall.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day, closing out Overdose Awareness Month (August), and beginning Recovery Month (September). On Friday, I joined City of Melrose Health and Human Services recovery coaches, staff, city officials, and members of the public for a flag raising and resource fair. We honor all those in our community impacted by the opioid epidemic and substance misuse, we grieve and remember those that we have lost, and we stand ready to assist and support those on their recovery journey.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to join our school district leadership to welcome new educators to Melrose Public Schools! Our new staff include the 17 positions restored thanks to the override, as well as replacements for retirements and resignations. It was wonderful to welcome new faces and say hello to those returning to the district or taking on new roles. Welcome to MPS!

With one month to go until the September 1, 2026 state primary election, there’s no time like the present to check your voter registration status (www.sec.state.ma.us/OVR) and make sure you’re ready to cast a ballot by mail, during early in-person voting, or in-person on Election Day.

Please note that if your party registration appears different than you remember or if your registration is inactive, it’s easy to update your details or status using the “update your voter registration” link on the website linked above. Saturday, August 22 is the last day to register to vote if you plan to participate in the 2026 state primary election.
