We're excited to announce the arrival of our new ambulance!

As you may have already seen, we received our new ambulance. The new ambulance replaced our (tired) 2013 Road Rescue ambulance with over 175,000 miles, which has been serving our primary service area (PSA) since it was brand new. The new ambulance was originally ordered during COVID, but due to various shortages, it finally made its way to Melrose. All of the equipment and supplies have been transferred from the old ambulance into the new one.

As you can see, we’ve changed up our graphics to help us stand out and ensure we’re easily recognized as we continue to serve our community. Around every ten years, we try to update our graphics on the new ambulances to help maintain a fresh, clean look. We have added additional safety/reflective stripes to help motorists identify emergency vehicles, ultimately keeping our crews safer on our streets and highways.

We are proud to say we are maintaining our self-sufficient status, meaning there was no burden to the taxpayers for this new ambulance. Being a volunteer department, this is a huge deal, as most insurance companies do not reimburse for the total cost of a medical or transport call.

You might see the old ambulance parked outside our fire hall until we find its next place to call home.

We had a little excitement at tonight’s meeting. Once a month, our team gets together for training in order to keep our skills up-to-date. This time, we had multiple pediatric trauma scenarios set up. Pediatric and adult traumatic events can vary due to their size and various developmental stages. It is important for our crews to be able to identify an injury/illness and determine the most appropriate treatment plan quickly.

While we were wrapping up the scenarios, our friends with Life Link III stopped by to finish our landing zone training. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate at last month’s meeting but we were pretty lucky that they were able to fly in tonight. The flight crew went over loading/unloading, their supplies, various scenarios, and provided tours of the helicopter.

If a crew determines a helicopter is needed, we can typically have one on the ground within 25 minutes (from the time of the request) anywhere in our primary service area. The benefit of a scene landing is that the flight crew can assess the patient and determine the most appropriate hospital based on the patient's needs. The flight crew could have the patient at the appropriate hospital within 10-25 minutes, saving valuable time compared to transporting to a local hospital. We are all very fortunate to have at least five medical helicopters based all over central Minnesota.

As always, please be safe and be kind to one another. We never know what the next person is going through.

Happy Friday Everyone! We are finally catching up after another busier week. We wanted to highlight two separate training house fires that two of our crews stood by at Saturday morning/afternoon.

One of the trainings was put on by Alex Tech and hosted by Grey Eagle along with Sauk Centre and Villard Fire Departments.

The other training was Hosted by the St. Augusta Fire Department along with Rockville Fire & Rescue.

These training fires are one of the final tests for new firefighters to gain their certification. They also help keep the current firefighters up-to-date on their skills and new techniques. The property owners were gracious enough to allow the area departments to use the old houses to perform the necessary training.

Our crews stand by at all structure fires to help provide scene support as well as be on-site in the event someone is injured or needs to get checked out. After the firemen exit the fire (and before for trainings) we check their vitals to ensure they are safe enough to be on their own and possibly go back into the structure. It’s very common for most firefighter to have very high blood pressure and heart rates after exiting a fire with all of their gear, the high temperatures as well as the exertion from trying to extinguish the fire. We have had a situation before where someone's vitals have been dangerously high to the point where they could not return into the structure for fear that they could have a medical emergency and need to be rescued themself.

Teamwork makes dream work!

Today was another busy day with back-to-back calls but our team has once again stepped up to help out our community. Tonight we had all three of our ambulances out on separate calls for service.

As we finalized our monthly reports, we found out we had broken one of our records. Our crews responded to 127 calls for service in the month of March. Our previous record was 116 calls in December of 2024. At the time of this post, our crews have responded to 364 calls since the begining of 2025!

This may not seem like a very impressive number to some but please keep in mind that all of our members have full-time jobs and are still dedicating time to serve our central Minnesota cities and communities in their free time. We only keep one ambulance fully staffed at a time and rely on other members to call in for standby to ensure that our area has an ambulance ready in the event there is an emergency.

As always, please be safe and be kind to one another.

Last night we had the honor of celebrating a life-saving award. Allison Hiltner, Tyler Welle, and Gina Eggert were handed certificates, life-saving pins, hugs, and as a special bonus fish caught by Steve yesterday morning. The crew also received a special card handmade by Steve’s wife that included the cardiac strip that was printed during the code and originally given to Cath Lab. The celebration was filled with happy tears, hugs, conversation, and reminiscing of the details that evening.

Thank you to our many volunteers and the continued support of our community in our surrounding communities.

Another successful ambulance refresher in the books.

Every two years, our team has to complete a 24-hour refresher course to maintain our National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) & state certification. We want to thank Mid-Minnesota EMS Education for providing another wonderful class. Sometimes these classes can be a little mundane but as you can tell from the photos, the instructors and our team try to make the best of it!

Throughout our course, we went over multiple components including CPR, new tactics & techniques, scene & patient safety, mass casualty incidents, trauma, strokes, and an overview of both our equipment as well as our other public safety partners' equipment.

We also want to give another shout-out to the Greenwald Lions for providing us with pizzas from Woody's Bar & Grill and the other community members for keeping us well-fed!

Here's to serving our communities for another two years!
