Spring ephemerals like trilliums get a lot of attention because they're the year's first flowers, but we love fall blooms too! In the fall, these plants grow tall and bright to attract late-season pollinators. Here are a few we've seen over the past week:

1. Black-eyed Susan
2. New York ironweed
3. Wingstem (or yellow ironweed)
4. Bottle gentian
5. Great blue lobelia

What are your favorite fall flowers?

Last week, community members from across Fayette County joined the Mountain Watershed Association (MWA) and Center for Coalfield Justice (CCJ) for a public meeting on data center impacts.

Four panelists from groups across the region gave insights into strategies for organizing, public policy, and how data centers can impact the environment and the economy. If you couldn't make it, here's what you missed!

Heart of the Highlands is back — and we can't wait to see you there.

Join us on Sunday, October 4, for an evening of live music, delicious food, and community at the beautiful Sparks in the Valley event space.

Proceeds benefit Mountain Watershed Association’s legal efforts to protect Indian Creek watershed and Four Mile Run watershed from potentially devastating impacts from the Rustic Ridge Coal Mine expansion, which was recently approved by the DEP and legally appealed by MWA.

Individual tickets: $50

We only have space for 50 people at this intimate event. Get your tickets now at mtwatershed.com/events!

(Thanks to Scott from Parts&Labor design for the excellent flyer!)

We would like to welcome Elle Paul, who will be joining MWA as our latest Pennsylvania Mountain Service Corps AmeriCorps member! Elle will help our conservation and outreach teams with important work like water sampling, education events, and more. She's from Ohio, where she earned a degree in Environmental Science and Sustainability from Ohio University.

"Although I just started my service, I am extremely excited to explore and give back to the Indian Creek and Youghiogheny River Watersheds and the communities that reside in them," says Elle.

We're thrilled to have another excellent AmeriCorps member on our team! If you see her around the watershed, feel free to say hi!

Join Mountain Watershed Association and Center for Coalfield Justice for a community townhall on the data center development in Fayette County on September 10, 2026 at the Connellsville Area Community Center from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm.

Data center development is expanding rapidly in Southwestern Pennsylvania. A prior event regarding data centers in Fayette County left people with more questions than answers. The “People’s Townhall” will address those issues, including environmental impacts, economic and energy repercussions, and the importance of protective ordinances.

Questions from the crowd are welcome, and light refreshments will be provided. Yard signs will be available for those who want one!

Meeting Details:

Connellsville Area Community Center

201 East Fairview Avenue, Connellsville, PA 15425

6:00 – 8:00 pm

Our results were almost all in the green as of Wednesday! But Friday is a different day, and it rained a lot around most of our sampling sites.

If the water at your preferred swimming spot looks like this (very brown) or smells funny, wait about 24 hours for it to clear up before you swim. For all the kayakers who may enjoy the high water fun, consider nose plugs and cover any open wounds!
