The nest counts represent data collected by the UCF Marine Turtle Research Group, Sebastian Inlet State Park and Ecological Associates, Inc. within the 20.7 miles of the Archie Carr NWR. Note that UCF reported the first nesting Green Turtles of this year, one on 5/23 and two more on 5/24.

According to Chris Long, the Loggerhead nests declined to the 40 to 50 range earlier in the week and then came back up later in the week.

Sargassum on our Shores

A significant amount of Sargassum seaweed has made its way onto the beaches of Brevard County. While this influx of beach wrack may be unsightly, it is an incredibly important part of our coastal ecosystem. As such, Brevard County does not remove it from our beaches, instead, we wait for the wind and tides to naturally pull it from the sand, back into the sea.

It’s sea turtle nesting season here in Brevard County, so this let’s talk about the importance of our beaches as sea turtle habitat. Did you know... Florida hosts 90 percent of the sea turtle nests laid in the U.S. each season? Brevard County’s 72 miles of beaches are part of the largest nesting aggregation site of loggerhead sea turtles in the world. That means it’s critical to keep our beaches clean, flat, and dark during nesting season to help ensure the survival of these protected species. Find out more at seaturtlespacecoast.org

Nests have already appeared in Brevard County this season. Protect our friends!

Since nesting season has already begun in Florida, we wanted to remind you of a few ways that you can help!

Most importantly, if you encounter a nesting sea turtle, remember to keep your distance in order to give the turtle the space and time it needs to lay its eggs. The same rules apply for sea turtle hatchlings as this is the most crucial stage of their life. The best way to view sea turtles during nesting season is to find a turtle walk program near you!

You can also help by looking after the beach. Remember to turn off your lights at night, take your belongings with you, and fill in any holes that you may find. Keeping the beach dark, flat, and free of debris helps our turtles to safely return to the ocean.

We thank you for looking out for our sea turtles, and we wish everyone a happy nesting season! 🐢

Hope your week is off to a great start. Happy Monday, everyone!

Did you know... sea turtles, like other reptiles, are cold-blooded? Sea turtles must rely on the temperature of their surroundings to maintain their body temperature. During prolonged cold weather or sudden cold snaps, sea turtles may become cold-stunned, which is a type of hypothermia. The largest cold-stunning event in Florida happened in 2010 when more than 4,500 sea turtles were rescued in the state.
