Charge into Fire Safety!

This year’s Fire Prevention Week™ (FPW™) campaign, October 5-11, “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” works to educate everyone about using these batteries safely. The campaign stresses how important it is to BUY, CHARGE, and RECYCLE safely when it comes to lithium-ion batteries.

Charge into Fire Safety: 3 Steps
Buy only listed products. When buying a product that uses a lithium-ion battery look for a safety certification mark such as UL, ETL, or CSA. This means it meets important safety standards.

Charge devices safely. Always use the cords that came with the product to charge. Follow the instructions from the manufacturer. Buy new chargers from the manufacturer or one that the manufacturer has approved. Charge your device on a hard surface. Don’t overcharge your device. Unplug it or remove the battery when it’s fully charged.

Recycle batteries responsibly. Don’t throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins because they could start a fire. Recycle your device or battery at a safe battery recycling location. Visit call2recycle.org to find a recycling spot near you.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve explored the challenges facing EMS in Wyoming County—staffing shortages, long transports, limited funding, and the loss of ALS providers.

Now, with the feasibility study underway, the next step is to identify solutions. This study will look closely at:
• How 911 calls are handled and dispatched
• Where stations and crews are located—and if changes could improve response times
• Staffing models, including ways to better support volunteers and sustain paid providers
• Funding options to make EMS reliable and fair for all communities

Progress has already been made:
• Countywide coordination for dispatch protocols
• Launch of the EMS Staffing Program with flexible incentives
• Training reimbursement programs to lower barriers
• Advocacy at the state and federal level for sustainable funding

But the study will help us go further. Its recommendations will guide the long-term structure of EMS in Wyoming County, ensuring every call for help gets the fastest, most capable response possible.

If you joined us for Honorable But Broken, you’ve seen how serious these challenges are across Pennsylvania. Now it’s our turn to act—to make sure our local EMS system can serve us for decades to come.

How you can help:
• Keep this conversation going—share what you’ve learned with neighbors and family
• Support your local ambulance company through memberships or donations
• Talk with your municipal leaders about why EMS sustainability matters to you

This post is part of WCHC’s mission to strengthen rural healthcare systems—and support the people behind the sirens.
